What to expect during a Reiki session: You will need to take off your shoes, belt, jewelry, and watch. Please keep all your clothes on (be prepared and wear loose clothing). Please either turn off or put your cell phone to vibrate. The room will probably have candles, soft music, water fountain and dimmed lighting; all to promote an atmosphere of relaxation. There usually is a massage table for you to lie upon; often there is a pillow for your head and at least one to go under your knees to prevent back aches.
There is no pulling or tugging involved in Reiki. During a Reiki session, the Reiki practitioner will lay their hands on you or 1-3 inches from your body, beginning with your head and working their way done to your feet. The practitioner will spend a few minutes at each spot and as they do this their hands will heat up; this happens because the Reiki practitioner is the conduit for the life force energy that comes from God and is transferred to the client. Remember that the Reiki practitioner is not the source of the healing, God is. When your body receives the energy it uses it where it is needed most. Some practitioners follow a set pattern others follow their intuition and concentrate on the areas they are led to heal.
The treatment itself feels wonderful. Most likely you will find yourself relaxing enough that you will want to fall asleep. That's okay; in fact it's a good thing. You don't need to do anything but lay there and enjoy the attention. Reiki is not a religion; it is a spiritual practice that promotes peace and harmony; is a loving energy. Your religious background or even the lack of belief in God doesn't matter. You will receive a healing whether you believe in Reiki or not.
Some of the ways that Reiki could help are: to relief anxiety about a job interview, experience less trauma to your body when having surgery, to have a faster recovery time after surgery, increase harmony between family members or coworkers or friends, getting clarity and feeling centered enough to make well thought out decisions ; ease emotional pain. There is really no way to list all the ways that Reiki could be of assistance.
If you are unable to go to a practitioner for a Reiki session there is another option: long distance healing. You go about your day as you normally would while the Reiki practitioner spends a few minutes sending light and healing energy to you. You may or may not notice when it is done, but you will begin to feel better.
