What Remains: A Gardening Poem

J. K. Baurain
Illumined by the sun's beams,
Fluttering in the breeze,
Green leaves harness flecks of light
And inward churn.

Children's fingers pluck,
rabbits nibble,
squirrels cast clumps of ground asunder,
yet life eludes and ripens.

Green, red, yellow, orange,
hues to savor in the glow of sun and on a plate;
betwixt firm teeth of every size, all flavors burst.
Garden's essence is not lost.

Nourishing life and memory,
staying the ticking certainty,
then beckoning deft fingers
as thawed earth's fragrance lilts again.

Writing, parenting, and teaching are what engage my heart and mind currently. In my earlier traveling days, I lived the joys of language learning and teaching abroad.   View profile
