What Respect Means to Me

Jennifer G.
I was analyzing the word respect today, while I was at work. Well, they didn't have anything for me to do other than answer the phones and a phone call only lasts for a moment or so, and then you just sit and wait for the next person to call. It's times like that when I get a lot of thinking done. It never does me any good; I'm still just as dumb as when I started. Anyway, I looked up the definition on the Internet and this is what I got:

- Esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability.

- To hold in esteem or honor

- An attitude of admiration or esteem (that's the definition that I really liked)

And there were many many others, I just picked a few to put in here.

So, what does it really mean to respect someone? To look up to them, the think very highly of them. Maybe, to wish that you were like them. I think that in today's world there is a serious lack of respect. I look at my brother and sister and I don't see that they respect my parents and I know that that is what it's like in a lot of families nowadays, and in a lot of cases the parents don't respect the kids either (now I sound like a teenagers, well, technically I still am, LOL), but it's true. I never really thought about the word respect until recently and I think that earlier when I was thinking about it, I had some pretty interesting things that I could have wrote about, but at this moment in time there's not all that much I have to say. All my thoughts got wiped out in the course of the day. They got replaced by other ones and now I can't remember what it is that I wanted to put in here, but I would appreciate it if some of you thought about the word respect and let me know what you think. I think that in any relationship, it's important to have respect for the other person. Without it, we'd all treat each other very poorly and not ever make any friends. When you respect someone, you treat them with the respect that they deserve. You would never be mean to someone who you cared about and well, we shouldn't be mean to anyone else either, but It's always nice to have respect cause that makes it easier to treat them well. Maybe respect is just being nice to someone, that's a form of respect, right?? You don't have to think they did something great to respect them; everyone deserves respect, even those who don't respect others. Maybe by respecting those who don't necessarily deserve it, they'll see the need to change themselves.
