What is Rhinoplasty?

Even during the time of the ancients, people were already conscious of the way their noses looked. In fact, the earliest recorded rhinoplastic operations were credited to Sushruta, an important Ayurvedic physician in ancient India, during circa 500 BCE (Before Common Era). He described the ancient procedure in a scripture called: Sushruta Samhita where he described how he along with his disciples restored the noses of poor citizens who were subjected to nasal amputation due to tax violations and various other crimes.

What is a Rhinoplastic Procedure?

Rhinoplasty a surgical procedure which is implemented for three main reasons:

1. It could be done for the sake making the patient's nose look better.
2. Or done for the sake of fixing the nose after being subjected to some major form of abuse or trauma, for example getting your nose hammered by one Pacman's monstrous left haymakers or getting into a car accident.
3. Another possible reason for getting this procedure would be to correct a birth defect or breathing problem.

The Choices to Make with Rhinoplasty

There are two general ways to choose in terms of the approach to be used by your cosmetic surgeon. In a closed rhinoplasty, the initial incisions are made inside the nostrils. The one essential advantage of this approach could be the fact that the post operation scars are invisible to the naked eye.

As for the open approach, an additional inconspicuous incision is made in the area of skin that separates the nostrils. The additional incision provides the surgeon with greater visibility making it easier for them to do the procedure. The increased visibility essentially aids in reducing the overall risk of surgical error making the open approach the best choice for most cosmetic surgeons.
