In modern healthcare, the role of dentistry is crucial. This is because the teeth and mouth form an integral part of the human body. It would be impossible to have a healthy body without healthy teeth. Dentistry is a distinct branch of a modern health care system. In most advanced countries, the role of dentistry has been recognized and various steps are being taken in this direction.

Dentistry deals mainly with the health and well-being of teeth and mouth. Dentistry can be defined as the branch of medicine which deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of various diseases that affect our teeth. Dentistry has its own branches and they're very unique. For example, orthodontics - deals with incorrect bites or cosmetic dentistry - deals primarily with the aesthetic aspect of the teeth and the face.

Cosmetic dentistry is a field of dentistry which deals with using surgical procedures to improve the appearance of teeth and the face. Cosmetic dental procedures are becoming more popular these days. One way to find a cosmetic dentist is to search online or you can also find a cosmetic dentist by asking your friends or relatives.

In recent years, many new developments have been made in the field of dentistry. These are mainly a result of developments in other fields. For example, dentistry borrows heavily from biomedical engineering and material sciences. Certain breakthroughs in the field of dentistry such as dental implants are mainly due to development of better materials and surgical procedures.

Dentistry is a highly lucrative field. Even in advanced countries, the number of dentists per thousand people is very low. In developing and underdeveloped countries, there are very few number of dentists and so dental healthcare is not available easily.

To become a dentist, a person has to put in a lot of effort and study for many number of years (6) in a dental college. The study structure and regulations of dental study differ from country to country. In the United States, dentists usually have a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. Dentists in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth countries have a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree. Certain dentists also train for more number of years, sometimes in other countries to obtain better skills.

In just a matter of a few decades, the field of dentistry has become very large. Today, the patient has a number of options when it comes to dental procedures. Many of these procedures were not feasible just a few decades ago. Developments in the field of dentistry are largely owed to other fields and at a pace which they're being made, we can only expect more positive developments in the future.
