What Are the Secrets to Coloring Your Own Hair

Lee VanAmee
Women and men have been coloring their own hair for many years. There are times when you want to try it for yourself and here are some pointers that you may consider:

Courage: The first thing you need is to feel comfortable coloring your own hair. This comfort level can only come with some experience of actually do it, you have to do something a few different times before you can feel like you are making progress and the fear is always there at first. It helps if you have a friend that can help or even if you can do this together at least you can share your results and try again if need be. Most hair care products on the market are very simple to use and give you very specific instructions so it prevents a lot of the guess work and you can adapt any changes later if need be.

Internet: There are a billion and a half web sites that will train you on some of the basics on hair color, the color charts, how to fix mistakes, where to buy different products, etc. There is a wealth of knowledge that can get you started and steer you in the right direction.

Experiment: you really have to try a few brands and also a few different colors before you will be comfortable with a tried and true home coloring system for yourself. That way you know how your own hair reacts to each product; you can never know this from someone else's results, we all have completely different hair texture. This means that you shouldn't wait until you have a big event planned or something that you are going to feel self conscious at before you go ahead and try a new color or even a new brand of color. Pick a weekend during the month that is low key so that if the results are not what you want you can always duck into a store and buy some lighter or darker shade or some repairing products. If your hair is too light after you are done you can always put a darker color on top of it; if it is too dark you can shampoo it with a harsh shampoo over and over and that will lighten it a bit. Do not try to do all of these processes in the same day though; as it will dry out your hair.
