Historic Leysdown

Leysdown was once called Legusdun, as it was mentioned in the Doomsday Book. In those days, the fishermen paid a special rent to the King for the right to set up weirs along the Medway and Thames as well as having fishing rights for the coastline. The 'King's special rent' is no longer payable.

Aviation History

There is a Grade II listed building called Muswell Manor at the eastern tip of the island known as Shellness. It is now used as a hotel. In 1909, the building became the first headquarters for the Aero Club and the surrounding areas was the place where the world's first factory was situated. Many aviators such as Shorts, Rolls, Wrights and many more made their name here. Lord Brabazon made the first flight in England. There is also a small exhibition in the bar commemorating these events and famous people, which is open during school holidays.

Accommodation

There are lots of chalets and caravans for rental in Leysdown. Regular visitors to Leysdown own their own chalets and return for weekends and holidays throughout the year.

There are not many hotels that are available in Leysdown. There is the Shurland, a hotel on the Isle of Sheppey located in Eastchurch village. The Muswell Manor is also a hotel in Leysdown-on-Sea. There is the Harts Holiday Village, which is self-catering accommodation. Most families visit this holiday village.

Leysdown-on-Sea is, also, the perfect place to visit for a day out if you are in the area of Kent during the summer season in England.
