What to Do and What to See in San Antonio, Texas

If you are looking for a vacation spot that offers not only fun and great weather, but history as well, then plan a trip to San Antonio, Texas.

San Antonio is home to the Alamo, the location of one of the most famous battles in US history. See where Jim Bowie, Davey Crockett and others fought and died for Texas independence against the Mexican army. Behind the church, there is a beautiful garden surrounded by a replica of the compound.

Another claim to fame for this city is the RiverWalk. This is an attraction like no other; there are shops and various restaurants populating the river banks that run throughout the city. Visitors can walk along the river banks or take a relaxing boat ride, seeing fountains, plants and ducks, even catch a play on a waterfront stage.

This city was also home to the 1968 World's Fair, which featured a 750' tower inside Hemisfair Park, a trip up the elevator for a birds-eye view of the city is a must see. Don't forget to take the same trip after dark for a spectacular view. The park is also home to beautiful fountains, plants and art.

In fact, there is beautiful art everywhere in the city. You will see art along the RiverWalk, inside Hemisfair Park, in the parks and most public areas. If you happen to be on vacation from a northern state, the amount of art outside will astound you.

If you are in the mood to travel outside of the city, and are a western movie buff, take the drive to Alamo Village. Alamo Village is located roughly 150 miles from San Antonio, on Happy Shahan's ranch. This is the replica of the Alamo compound that was built and used in John Wayne's epic movie, The Alamo.

Since the filming of the movie, the 'set' of the Alamo and of the accompanying town have been turned into the "Worlds Largest Outdoor Movie Set". Visiting here allows you to step back in time among the towns' sheriff, gun fights in the street and of course the towns' singing cowboy. Look carefully, you may see a scene from your favorite western film.

If fun in the sun and the beach are more up your alley, then take a trip to Corpus Christi. Here you will experience the sights, smells and sounds of the Gulf of Mexico. If you are a beach comber you will find shells, oysters, even hermit crabs along the beach. A word of caution however, please leave the hermit crabs on the beach where they belong, these are great pets, but only if you are prepared for them.

If a more commercial vacation is what you are looking for, or if you have children in your traveling party, then hanging around San Antonio is the choice for you. Directly across from the Alamo you will find a variety of shops, a wax museum, a Ripley's museum and plenty of other fun-loving shops and attractions.

San Antonio is a great location for a budget conscious vacation, fun for the whole family and incorporates history with the fun.
