What is Sexy Anyway? A Look at Maxim's 'Unsexy' List

Crissy Gottberg
Maxim has been a popular men's magazine dedicated to what men want to know, right? Sexy women, some sports, a few cars, and of course more sexy women.

Now they are branching into the "Unsexy" department. They not only named Sarah Jessica Parker (from Sex in the City) as the number one "Unsexiest", but listed others such as Britney Spears, Madonna, Sandra Oh and Amy Winehouse.

If you look through Maxim Online it doesn't take long to see what type of women they consider sexy: voluptuous, tan, with little clothing and a lot of alluring looks.

If you compare Parker and the others to the pictures in Maxim it isn't hard to see why they would dub them "Unsexy", but on the same lines I would never make it into their sexy category. I don't know anyone in real life who would, and considering how many photos are manipulated in magazines and books across the US I doubt all of those in the sexy category would make it if they went by real life looks.

Does Sarah Jessica Parker belong on the "Unsexy" list? For Maxim, yes. She is too skinny, and probably has too much of a personality for Maxim readers. I still find it a little shocking that she would make it to number one when certain others on the list are far more bizarre, but coming from a magazine that prides looks over anything else I really shouldn't be. Nor should she be offended by it, after all, look at the source.

Others in the media I would be more inclined to call "Unsexy" include Huge Grant, for his ability to go from little known to major star after sleeping with a prostitute and getting caught. Or how about Lindsey Lohan who got two DUI's and drug possession charges after partying at night clubs.

For sexy I would vote for Jamie Lee Curtis, the star of "A Fish Called Wanda", "True Lies" and other past greats, for posing for a magazine, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, "in her underwear as she looks in the privacy of her own bedroom, without benefit of stylists, makeup or flattering camera angles." But it wasn't unflattering at all. She was beautiful, she was over 40, and she was natural just like when you or I turn to a mirror, naked, and primp ourselves. She had guts, she had self awareness, and more then anything she realized how her image was being used to make others want to diet, get surgery, and try all they could to be like her. So she showed them what she really was.

What's sexy? Is it the physical form? Sure, that will get you going. But true sexuality isn't in the body, it's in the mind and the soul, and when we strive for an outward showing of our inward appearance to ourselves then who and what is REALLY sexy will change dramatically, not only in our own day to day lives, but in the media as well.

I see, so I guess you're one of those 'sexy on the inside' people?

It's Maxim! They were judging people on their looks, it's what they do. I don't think bad behaviour causes deductions with them. Nor do I think admirable pro-female body image efforts were really on their radar for being more sexy.

hugh (i spelled it wrong) grant. He was in "9 Months" and other movies after being arrested for hireing a prostitute, and the prostitute got a book deal out of it... go figure.
