If you are not familiar with the contenders in the category, here is a brief synopsis of each of the five entertaining reality shows that are up for the Emmy:
"American Idol" is the incredibly popular reality show on the FOX network hosted by Ryan Seacrest where contestants sing popular songs and are voted off one by one each week by the viewing audience. The show also features celebrity judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell. "American Idol" came to America in 2002 based on a popular British show. "American Idol" has been nominated for an Emmy 22 times in the past in various categories. However, "American Idol" has never won an Emmy.
"Dancing With the Stars" is another reality show based on a popular British television program. The show began in 2005 and features celebrities paired with professional dancers every week. The audience at home then chooses who will stay by voting over the phone. "Dancing With the Stars" has been nominated for 7 Emmy awards in the past two years. The show won two Emmys in 2006 in the categories of Outstanding Costumes for a Variety or Music Program and also for Outstanding Technical Direction.
"Project Runway" on Bravo is hosted by model Heidi Klum. The show began in 2005 and centers around aspiring fashion designers. Each week, the contestants are given a project and then voted off based on their performance as deemed by the judges. "Project Runway" has been nominated in the past for four Emmys in various categories, but the show has never won.
"The Amazing Race" has been on the CBS network since 2001. The popular reality show features 12 teams that race around the world vying for a chance to win $1,000,000. "The Amazing Race" has been nominated for 15 Emmy awards over the past 6 years in various categories. In 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006, "The Amazing Race" won the Emmy in the category of Outstanding Reality-Competition Program. The show has also won 3 other Emmys in various other categories.
"Top Chef" on Bravo has been on the air since 2006. The show is hosted Padma Lakshmi and features 15 chefs who compete against each other for a prize of $100,000. This year is the first time that "Top Chef" has been nominated for an Emmy award.
So who will win the Emmy for Outstanding Reality- Competition Program? The experts predict that "The Amazing Race" will take the prize yet again. According to media, "The Amazing Race" is truly "Amazing," and the show is unbeatable. Tune in to the Emmy awards at 8PM on September 16th on FOX to find out if the experts are right!
