What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Miscarriage?

Debi Rideout
It is very common for a pregnant woman to experience a miscarriage. Most miscarriages occur during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Miscarriage is when a woman loses her baby due usually to a genetic defect. It is rarely the woman's fault, and a miscarriage just means that there were chromosomal abnormalities making the pregnancy not a viable one. Some women are more susceptible to having miscarriages so make sure you are checked out by a doctor all through your pregnancy to see if there are any issues that can be addressed. There are many signs and symptoms of miscarriage.

Vaginal Bleeding

One of the first indications that something may be wrong with the fetus is that there will be vaginal bleeding. It could be simple spotting, or it may be lots of blood flowing. However, just because you are simple spotting does not mean automatically that you are having a miscarriage because sometimes it is just the fetus attaching itself to the inner wall which causes you to bleed. If you are passing grayish matter and blood then there may be a bigger chance that you are experiencing a miscarriage. Always see your doctor if you have any vaginal bleeding so it can be determined if you are actually having a miscarriage or not since only blood tests and an ultrasound can find out if you have actually had a miscarriage or not.

Abdominal and Pelvic Pain

Two of the signs and symptoms of having a miscarriage is abdominal pain and pelvic cramps. They usually come together. It can feel like you are having a very bad menstrual period. You may feel like you have very painful cramps and feel pain in your abdominal area. These symptoms are pretty common when having a miscarriage.

Back

Another sign and symptom of miscarriage is that your back will be bothering you. You may feel in your lower back a dull ache. That feeling of dull achiness in your back will probably last awhile. It can common on suddenly or gradually. Get checked out by your doctor if you have this symptom along with other symptoms for having a miscarriage.

Feelings

This is not as accurate as some other of the signs and symptoms of miscarriage, but sometimes a woman who is having a miscarriage just feels like something is not right. I have had three miscarriages myself, and each time I just felt like something was not right. My feelings were of a sense of dread, and my body just did not feel quite right. No one had to tell me that something was wrong with my baby. I already knew, and it was not a surprise when I was told that the fetus did not survive. Never just go by feelings though because they can be wrong too. Always see a medical professional for confirmation on whether you are having a miscarriage or not.
