What is a Skilled Writer?

Angel Tate
Words can be misleading when taken out of context, so a writer must be careful to construct the atmosphere that is most authentic to the context of the sources provided. To write objectively means the persuasive writer has gone to considerable lengths to eliminate or diminish biases or to being fair and open to all sides of an issue; objective writing is presenting a subject to the reader exactly how it is. But, objectivity is not all that is involved in being a good writer.

What defines a good writer?

An exceptional writer is able to manipulate readers into feeling what the writer wants them to feel...seeing what the writer wants them to see...hearing what the writer wants them to hear...and experiencing the full gamut of emotions that the writer wants the reader to feel. In essence, the writer pulls the readers into the story and makes the reader feel like she has become a part of the story. Many authors have allowed me to escape the drudgery of my day to day my life to surrender myself to a world of her creating. Not everyone can be a writer who is skilled with the ability to insert readers into the stories. The goal of any good work of literature, whether it is a novel, a news report, a speech, or an article of interest, is to persuade the reader to at least consider the author's point of view; to see life with all its flaws and perfections from the writer's eyes.

It's all in the details!

A writer should strive to provide readers with meaningful details that make the subject more provocative, interesting, and convincing; details that make the reader want to continue reading. Have you ever read something that really grabbed your interest and wouldn't let go? Have you ever read something that you could not put down until every word had been read to the very end? If so, that is an example of excellent writing.

Perhaps some people are born with good writing skills, but I highly doubt it. Like any skill, good writing takes practice (reading a lot helps, too). Like adding spice to a spice cake, detailed descriptions are what make mere words become so much more than just a story; they make the subject come alive...become real to the reader. It is the details and facts the author provides to the reader that give the writing backbone and substance.

A skilled writer can entice readers into her literary work of art with interesting details and statistics that support the author's opinion or stance on an issue...details that surround the reader and fill her senses. A good writer uses details and descriptive images that are thought provoking; that make the reader continue to think about the subject long after the last sentence has been read. Lastly, a good writer strives to leave the reader better informed, with insight into the subject that the reader had not previously considered or at the very least, highly entertained.

The author is a good writer, but the most memorable thing about this article is her use of the word "she" and "her" rather than gender neutral words. When writing literature, it's okay to write in your own style, but when trying to convey information, it is better not to use jarring language that distracts the reader.

I agree that writing is a skill that is learned over time. I knew from a young age that I loved to write, but it is definitely something that needs to be developed.

Great article. I once heard a quote from an unknown author that stated," Writing is like sex, the more you practice the better you get at it." I truly believe that if you keep practicing, you can achieve all the things listed in your article.
