What to Do when You Have a Small Budget but a Baby on the Way

Having a Baby on a Baby Budget

Pamala L. Ott
You're preparing for the birth of your baby but you don't know what is needed and what isn't needed for your baby. Your budget is tight but you want to provide everything you can to your baby without breaking the bank. Here are some ideas to help you save some money but get everything you need.

Shop Store Brand

Often we view store brand as less than ideal to buy but in the case of diapers, formula and baby food, store brand is just as good as any brand name. Often times store brand items are half as much as brand name options.

Join a Swapping Site

Sites such as your local Freecycle or sites like thredup.com will allow you to find great baby clothes are discounted or sometimes free prices. These sites have honor rules which means most of what you would receive is in new or like new condition. Often you don't have recourse if something is sent to you that is unusable but since it was purchased at a discount price or for free, this is a risk that is worth taking.

Join a Mom's Group

Often times a Mom's Group will help fellow mom's in need. Joining a Mom's Group will not only connect you with other mom's in your area but give you a resource for obtaining items you may need.

Search Craigslist

Craigslist is an option but also one that needs to be used carefully. You can find many items, especially furniture, at extreme discounted prices. When purchasing off craigslist always make sure to go in a group to pick up an item. Make sure to inspect whatever you are intending to purchase to make sure there are no defects in the item. If possible research the recalled items list before purchasing. Never purchase a used car seat due to the possibility of it have being involved in an accident.

Use Ebay

Similar to Craigslist but a bit safer, using Ebay will allow you to find items at discounted prices. There are some protections in place to help protect you from a unscrupulous seller. Investigate an item before purchasing to make sure it's safe for your child. Once again never buy a used Car Seat from Ebay.

Find a Local Church

Often local churches will have programs to help Mom's or Families in need. Don't be afraid to ask. These programs are there specifically in need of help.

Investigate Government Programs

For those who are in true need of assistance there are programs in each state available for use. Programs such as WIC or Food stamps can help in the purchase of food for yourself and your children.

There are many ways to save money and purchase the items needed for your new baby. You don't have to break the bank in order to have a baby.
