School is closed and my husband I have taken the day off from work. Quite honestly I can't wait to get outside, I do not even have boots or anything but who cares, it is not often that we get to enjoy such scenery in New Orleans. My youngest is two is so amazed, she keeps picking it up and putting it down. We have taken plenty of video clips and digital pictures. The roads are really bad and the drivers are even worse. After all, most people in New Orleans are not used to driving in this kind of weather. We made snow angels, snowmen and anything else you could possibly make with snow. Many of my neighbors were home with their children and we had a good old fashion snowball fight. You know, the kinds you read in story books. We all had become hungry after all of the playing so in we went for a cup of hot chocolate.
After getting warmed up my husband and I told the children we are going on an adventure and piled everyone into the car to take a road trip to our favorite Chinese restaurant for some lunch. We made a trip down to Red Star Chinese Restaurant, we could have opted for delivery but that would not make for a great memory, so what normally would be a 30 minute drive turned into one and a half. The roads were so bad and all the cars were driving really slow, most stores and businesses were closed. Our Chinese restaurant was open and we weren't the only customers arriving for our fix of lunch.
It was getting late and I was more concerned about getting home before the roads started to ice up. So we quickly finished what started out to be lunch but wound up being dinner due to the weather and the added time it had taken us to get into to town. On the way back, I could not help but to think that people in the northeast deal with this kind of weather all of the time and if I had to choose between a hurricane and snow, I think I would still choose the hurricane. The snow was nice, but somehow it just feels out of place. Do not get me wrong, it is pretty and the smell in the air is so crisp and fresh but it still feels like a mistake.
It was nice to get home and enjoy the day off. I know the is not going to last forever but then again I think I am going to go search the internet to find the last time it snowed in New Orleans. Maybe it never did. For a change the Northeast gets all of the rain and New Orleans gets a taste of the white stuff. I think it is just goes to show you that we humans have no control over the acts of Nature.
It has been a nice experience and I think I might prepare myself for the years to come by getting a few sleighs and boots.
