What so Proudly We Watched Aguilera at the Super Bowl

Christina Aguilera Dishonors My National Anthem

Marie Anne St. Jean
What is it with celebrities messing with my National Anthem? Christina Aguilera was granted the honor of singing The Star Spangled Banner during opening ceremonies of Super Bowl XLV and blew it. I was sitting at my computer and only half-listening to the TV behind me, but I've heard the National Anthem enough times that I knew something wasn't right, even without fully paying attention. It sounded to me like Aguilera sang the words as "what so proudly we watched". I'm sorry, but I don't recall those words being part of the lyrics. I've since heard that she even left out a verse. Unbelievable.

Christina isn't the first celebrity to dishonor my National Anthem. Roseanne Barr belted it out in a very crude fashion, grabbing her crotch and spitting during opening ceremonies of a baseball game in 1990. She later blew it off, saying that she was paying tribute to the dip-chewing men on the mound, but that's a crock. She can't sing any better than my dog can, and every screeching word she sang, every gesture made was nothing but a mockery. You don't mess with a national symbol. That's like desecrating the flag.

Christina Aguilera is a celebrated singer (well, some think she is, anyway) who was born in this country. How is it that she could not know the words to the song that is the very epitome of what this Country and Her flag stands for? Aren't they taught that in grade school anymore?

Shame on you, Christina. What so proudly we watched indeed.

Who hires these singers, anyway? Personally, I'd like to hear some of the military choirs sing it...they have the most beautiful arrangements.

I know that nerves can get the best of anyone in a huge situation like that, but maybe she forgot to brush up before going out there. At any rate, a very embarrassing mistake. Saw your comment near mine at the Forum about not being able to stay signed in...I've actually been able to DO it for a while today! Everyone, hurry up and leave your comments this morning!

I really do wish people asked to sing the National Anthem would see it as the honor it is and pay the proper respect. That includes getting the words right AND not trying to show off their own ability or lack thereof to embellish every note with their own thoughts of how it should have been written. Speaking as a musician myself, plain and simple is sometimes the very best way you can express the beauty of a piece. No wonder most of the players the cameras caught during Aguillera's botched job look like they are more focused on the game than the Anthem. They probably couldn't recognize it.

so everybody who was born in this country that doesnt know the anthem is unpatriotic? then i must be a terrorist becuz i still dont know the anthem. and comparing her to roseanne..really??? that was disrespectful! SHE MADE A MISTAKE!!! man people wonder why the world is so screwed up. everybody is judging people and not taking the time to put themselves in others shoes. and those of you who are this upset about a song there is obviously something deeper going on. there are people dying all over the country and christina missing a couple of words of a song is top news? try putting some of this energy into bringing equality to the world or making sure a child has good education. and for the hating ass author christina is a celebrated singer and you dont know what she was going through. like i said on another post, if it upsets you that much next year why dont you go in the middle of the field and sing the anthem since you are so perfect.

Just to clarify, I meant to say I missed the song, not that she screwed it up. I'm pretty sure I would have noticed the mistake!

    I totally missed it! Humiliating...

I was horrified on so many levels. It was disappointing, at the very least. Anyone honored to be asked to sing our National Anthem has a responsibility to it, this country, and our citizens. But then you know how I feel about that, as a military veteran and former Navy musician. I, too, had my opinion on it, and perhaps I can thank Ms. Aguilera for pushing me out of my writer's block for the past four months? ;) As always, Marie Anne, thank you for your service to this country and for always standing up to preserve the integrity of those things which we share as important.

Maybe the original version had too many syllables for her to remember.
