The disorder occurs when the intervertebral disc of the spine becomes weak and begins to erode. This leaves the spine compromised, as the spine depends on the discs for shock absorption. When the discs are damaged or degenerated, the vertebra has nothing to protect them during impacts and basically leaves the spine resting bone on bone. This can cause great pain and discomfort for sufferers.
There is little that can be done for the process, once it has begun. Some patients seek out chiropractic treatments, which can help alleviate pain and discomfort in the lumber region. It can also relieve pain from sciatica. Sciatica can occur in the lumbar region, when the sciatic nerve-which runs from the base of the spine down the back of both legs-is compressed due to a degenerated disc. It can also help restore muscles to their proper placement. Typically, when the patient suffers from spondylosis, the spine can become misaligned, which pulls muscles out of alignment too. This misalignment of muscles can create soreness and discomfort. Chiropractic treatments can help alleviate discomfort from both compressed nerve and muscles.
If the pain and discomfort is intense, some patients will resort to more invasive measures. Cortisone shots to the sciatic nerve can help deadened the nerve, thereby relieving the pain. However, cortisone shots can be expensive, painful and effective for as little as six months at a time.
Patients can also opt for surgery. They can either receive a fabricated intervertebral disc to help re-establish the structure of the spine and eliminating the discomfort of vertebrae on vertebrae pain. Patients can also opt to have the vertebra fused together. Vertebrae fusion will cause the patient to lose flexibility, but can see relief from constant pain. However, most spinal physicians will only suggest surgery as an absolute last resort, and will seek treatments that are less invasive.
Spondylosis suffers can benefit greatly from exercise. A simple 30 to 45 minute walk a day can help eliminate discomfort and help maintain flexibility in the lower back and hip region. Stronger muscles can mean better balance for the patients, as well as keeping joints in proper alignment. Keeping joints in better alignment can help ease the pain associated with spondylosis. Before starting any exercise regiment, it is always best to consult a physician to discuss your plans and determine if it appropriate for your current medical condition.
