What is Stevens-Johnson Syndrome?
Some Prescription, Over-the-Counter Medications Can Cause Severe Allergic Reaction
What Medications Cause Stevens-Johnson Syndrome?
Medications linked to SJS are ibuprofen, penicillins, barbiturates, sulfas, fluconazole, nystatin, valdecoxib, phenytoin, lamotrigine, nevirapine, ethosuximide, carbamazepine, Accutane, and anticonvulsants. In rare cases, SJS can be caused by the herbal supplement, ginseng. SJS has even been linked to the use of cocaine. However, it is important to note that SJS depends solely on the individual autoimmune response of the sufferer. Any medicine could cause Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
Are There Any Other Causes Of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome?
Viral infections such as Epstein-Barr, herpes, influenza, mumps, cat-scratch fever or histoplasmosis can cause Stevens-Johnson syndrome. People with Lupus or HIV infection are more susceptible to developing SJS.
What Are The Symptoms Of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome?
Symptoms start out as flu-like. Fatigue, sore throat and fever are common complaints and often misdiagnosed and treated with antibiotics. As the virus spreads, painful ulcers and lesions begin to develop in and around the mouth, anus and genitals. Conjunctivitis or pink eye develops in 30% of cases. A red rash spreads across the body, covering trunk, limbs and soles of the feet. If left untreated, the skin literally begins to slough off.
How Is Stevens-Johnson Syndrome Treated?
On account of its severity, SJS requires hospitalization. The patient is taken off the offending medication and given intravenous fluids. The prognosis is good if SJS is caught in time and the body is allowed to heal on its own. Aloe can be used to heal the discomfort of the rash and body lesions. It is best to follow the advice of your healthcare provider.
If you suspect you or someone you know has Stevens-Johnson syndrome, immediate hospital care is required.
