1) Does good reputation counts
We often ask ourselves this question when it comes to choosing a childcare center. Does it really matter to look out for a childcare center with a well known reputation knowing that it will most likely cost more? Well the answer is a good reputation probably counts in this case but do not blindly put all your trust on childcare centers with good reputation. You should instead spend some of your time to see for yourself if the particular child center has upheld their good reputation by ensuring the good quality and service has been well maintained. You could probably start by making an enquiry call to the center for some information such as operation hours, registration procedures, fees, etc. Then the next time you could make a visit to the center together with your child and have a first hand feel of the center. After that, you do not need to immediately make a decision or pay a deposit as it might be worthwhile checking out other centers available. After surveying a few centers, you would have made a decision and this is when you can pay a second visit to the center of your interest, at a different time if possible, to finish off the registration procedures.
2) Safety Features and Cleanliness
As it is normal for children to have an inquisitive nature, a childcare center that maintains a high level of hygiene starting from the floors, walls, alleys, kitchen, toilets to the toys and playing equipment should be one of the most important priorities when choosing your preferred center. In addition to that, the staff themselves should also adhere to such high levels of hygiene such as washing their hands regularly. Overall, the center should be adequately lit and well ventilated. Make sure the center also follows the basic rules of safety such as keeping medicines and hazardous substances locked in a shelf out of reach of the children, adequate first aid kits and working fire extinguishers, standard child proofing facilities such as covered outlets, safety gates, door latches, etc. The outdoor play area should be spacious enough and located on a level floor. If the center has a limited outdoor play area, then the indoor area should be spacious and safe (such as equipped with well cushioned walls) enough to encourage physical activity. Finally with the kidnapping of children being more commonplace, security concerns are high up in the minds of all parents. Strangers should not be able to just walk in and out of the center conveniently, and some centers have even step up their security level by being equipped with closed circuit cameras that enable the parents to monitor the developments of their children roam the internet.
3) A Stimulating and Comprehensive Curriculum
The ultimate aim of sending your child to a well known center is to provide them with the best opportunities to learn and to build a solid education foundation for their later years. The top notch childcare centers are usually well equipped to provide the best of both worlds to your child, with well structured schedules that incorporates both physical activity for a healthy body and reading or learning sessions (both individually and in groups) for a healthy mind. TV and videos are increasingly catching up in this age of multimedia and technology, so it seems that they inevitably will have a part to play in the curriculum. I have personally witnessed how my cousin learn to speak words (usually found in the video itself) faster than most peers of his same age through video watching. So using video as a teaching tool should not necessarily signify anything negative, you just have to make sure that they are educational, appropriate for their age and do not occupy a whole chunk of the curriculum. The center should also offer a wide range of toys to cater for children of different ages. As your child grows older, the toys should be appropriate enough to stimulate creative and imaginative play. After all, daily sessions which are fun and interesting stimulates the mind of the child more and makes learning faster and easier.
4) Staff and Caregivers
Staff and caregivers can be likened to the final piece of a jigsaw puzzle. Without them, your jigsaw puzzle will never look complete and beautiful; no matter how well arranged the preceding pieces are. In other words, without dedicated and trained staff, the top notch facilities available in the childcare center would not be of any use. After all, you chose to send your children to childcare centers on the presumption the trained, qualified staff offers advantages over your traditionally trusted home nannies and caregivers. Childcare center employees should be trained in early childhood education, child psychology, emergency CPR, etc. Try to speak to the administrator of the center to understand the child upbringing policy of the center to see if it fits into your opinion. Other than having enthusiastic and responsible staff, the ratio of caregivers to children should also be appropriate, otherwise, your child may not get the attention and care she needs in a center with inadequate staff but plenty of children.
