What You Teach Me

A Poem for Father's Day

J
I can't imagine how that felt
When the letter arrived and forever changed
Your childlike world upon which you knelt
A sudden man for that exchanged

Obvious comfort seemed now far
Where to turn in innocent gaze
You now must be the one to bare
And carry aloft in coming days

Responsible for oh so much
And still yet young how did you live?
The fear inside my heart would clutch
My mind would snap; I'd have to give

Yet on you went and showed the world
How young, how strong on wings of steel
You saw the darkness so unfold
God in heaven, how did you feel!

You took a hand much smaller than yours
And lifted her up to see the light
You fed a child and did the chores
Yet still so young, so full of fight

Friends so called yet turned like dogs
Upon hearing news from lands afar
Like walking through the Baskerville bogs
Yet bullet proof, your inner star

And so you rose and made a life
With study, work and armour plated
You found a friend to be your wife
From heaven above I was elated

Environment safe with brand new child
My brother so in strong safe hands
From your wanderings in the wild
I think I came from distant lands

And so it is with heart outpouring
That I see your works; what came to be
Always there still as we're calling
Always holding brother and me

So what you taught is what you are
A strength from heaven pouring down
You really did it, it seemed so far
In bitterness I would have drowned

So beyond genetics I see your face
Recognize my own from far away
Thus we are joined beyond this place
As every moment is Fathers day
