What is Thanksgiving About

A Poem of What I Feel Thanksgiving Should Be About

lori beeler
The smell of the pumpkin pie cooling and the turkey roasting

Men in easy chairs watching football and boasting

Children playing in the newly fallen leaves of orange, brown, and gold

Grandparents telling of their Thanksgivings from the days of old

Time to eat so everyone to the table flees

A big fine dinner surely to please

But before digging in to the mashed potatoes and dressing

Dad must first say the blessing

For you see that Thanksgiving is not about the meals that we eat

Or about how many stories there are to repeat

It is not about the parades or the football on T.V.

It is about the numerous blessings bestowed on you and me

It is about giving thanks just for living in the Land of the Free and the Brave

And where our Grand Old Flag can proudly wave

It is about remembering the ones who are no longer there

To partake of the bounty and stories to share

It is about traditions worthy of being passed on

Whether a traditional Thanksgiving story or even a song

This Thanksgiving before you even serve the meal

Count your blessings, hug your family and tell them how you feel
