Government requirements
Find out if you have to get a permit or if they have local ordinances. Your building codes and local zoning may have some certain requirements.
Shed Foundation
Before making your shed, you have to decide whether you want cement, concrete or a wood foundation. If this is going to be your first time building a shed, you may want to choose a wood framed one. Yet, a cement floor is known to be more durable and sturdy compared to a wooden floor. So it is really up to you. Just follow your preferences and your budget.
Frost Zone
Make sure whether you live in a frost zone or not. If you are on a frost zone, chances are the ground in your area will easily freeze. With that you need to have a frost protected foundation. This kind of foundation will allow your shed to better withstand the winter environment.
Other Useful Tips
1. If you are to build a wood framed shed, it is best to use treated wood. This kind of wood can stand firm against wood eating insects and wood rot. Pressure treated lumber is also a good choice.
2. Edges of the door should have a small metal frame built over them. This prevents door edges from being damaged. This tip is most useful when it comes to wooden doors, which are very prone to wear and tear, especially when the shed is used to store objects like lawn mowers.
3. Make sure your roofing materials are of high quality. Just like building a roof for your house, you should also use the same materials for your shed. Also make sure to install both underlayment and flashing.
4. Covering your exterior walls and roof with asphalt felt paper will help catch any leaks. Leaks are created overtime, so they are not always avoidable. Asphalt felt paper will help you in dealing with such leaks.
5. Last but not the least, the most important tip of all is learning how to be safe. Spend enough time in building your shed and do not do things in a rush. That way, you can properly and safely build your shed. Learning how to be safe also means proper planning which can also lead to lesser problems when in the process of building the shed.
