Before you choose what motorcycle you want you should probably think about these questions in your mind. You should also probably read my other articles on the subject!
1. What am I going to use this for motorcycle for? This is the most important thing that you should consider before making your decision. You can read my other article on the different kinds of motorcycle to help narrow down the kind of bike you want by type. Then you will still have to choose a brand. I would recommend you test out several different brands that have similar models you are interested in. If you want to be able to go off-road, look at the Dual-Sport models. If you're going to use it to commute then most models would work for you. Be sure to keep in mind if you are going to use it for long distance rides. If so keep that in your mind when test driving. It needs to be extremely comfortable. If you are going to go on a long distance ride with a passenger, then try to have them be on the back of it when you try it out to see if it is comfortable enough for them as well.
2. For often am I going to use it? This is very important. Always remember that things will lose a lot of their value after you take it off the lot. If you're going to be using your motorcycle frequently for many years to come, then make a good investment. If you are unsure, and will probably be using it only occasionally, then it is a better bet to invest in an entry level model.
3. What features do I want? Figure out what features you want before shopping. Be sure to enquire at the dealer whether you can get the features you want on a particular model and what it will cost you. You don't want to end up with a bike that does not allow you to get a certain feature.
4. What kind of gas mileage do I want? This is very important to a lot of people. Some people don't care and are looking for different things such as speed and look. However, with the gas prices today I think it is important to know the gas mileage that different bikes will get. In general smaller engines get better gas mileage. Be sure to decide whether you really need the bigger engine. Going for the smaller engine will not only save you money initially, but also in the long run with the better gas mileage that you will get.
5. What do I want to be able to carry? This deals with passengers and gear. In your going to be touring this is extremely important because you will want to find a motorcycle that can carry everything that you will want to have. Also if you're planning on having passengers then you'll want to pay close attention to how it would be for a passenger on your motorcycle.
