What to Think About Before Joining a Gym

Tori Morrison
For some people, having a gym membership is a life saver. If you're a person who needs motivation and doesn't have a lot of knowledge about exercise, or you need access to the equipment, then joining a gym could be a good option for you. Before you sign membership papers, consider some of these things:

Price

Every gym has its own membership fees. Some will offer you a lower rate if you pay up front for a whole year or commit to a certain amount of time. Be on the lookout for cheaper rates and offers; many gyms will hand out free passes for a week so that you can try out the equipment before you sign with them. Take advantage of that opportunity! Although one gym may offer you a cheaper rate, another gym might offer everything that you're looking for.

Time

Make sure you plan out time to go to the gym every week, otherwise your membership will go to waste. People often sign up, go for a month, and then stop going. If you want to join a gym but aren't sure if you'll be able to go consistently for a year, try getting a month-to-month membership that way you aren't wasting money on a full-year membership.

At-Home Exercises

There are plenty of exercises you can learn to do in the comfort of your own home and neighborhood that won't cost you anything. This requires some research and knowledge from others, but if you find the right mixture, it could save you hundreds of dollars a year in gym membership fees. Although you won't have access to a weight machine or treadmill, there are several exercises available to you. The internet is a valuable source of information regarding exercise. If you're a runner and need a workout plan, try looking at www.runnersworld.com. This site offers you a training plan for races, abs, cross training and much more!

Classes

Every gym offers classes that you can take, such as cycling and abs, and as a member, you can usually sign up for free. These classes have instructors that are there to motivate you and train you to be stronger. Being in one of these classes will also help you expand your knowledge about the body and how you can get an optimum workout.

Gyms can be a worthy investment if you consider all your options and set aside a good amount of time for them. Don't just settle for the first one you see; research gyms in your area and find out which value will work best for you.
