What You Need for a Transcription Job

Shannon Frye
If you are looking to get into the Transcription field, it will not cost you very much money to get started. You will need to find a company that will allow you to do Transcription. Most times, with Medical Transcription, you will need to have experience. If you do not have experience you can still get a Medical Transcription job but you must have taken some type of training and gotten a certificate. You will want to make sure that you tell each company that you apply to that you have received training and you have a certificate as well.

You will need to have Microsoft Word if you are planning on applying to any jobs that are online. You can find a lot of different Transcription companies online that you can apply to. Some of them are General Transcription and some of them are Medical Transcription. If you are looking for some different Transcription jobs I would suggest going to the website which is known as www.wahm.com. Here you will find message boards with a folder designed to help you find a job working from home in the Transcription field.

You will need to purchase Microsoft Word if you don't have it on your computer. You will need this to create your resume, unless you know somebody who has Microsoft Word or you can create the file on a computer at a library. You can bring along a floppy disk and transfer the file to your floppy disc. If you want to purchase Microsoft Word, it will probably cost you somewhere around $50-$100. This is a great program to have and you might need it to transcribe different audio files and type them out.

You will probably have to pay for a background check as well. It will probably cost you around $15.00 for a background check to be done. Each company might require this. Once you are hired on with a company you will need to purchase a set of headphones. You don't need a chat set, you only need basic headphones. You will want a good pair with a volume control knob that you can adjust. You will also need to purchase the transcribing software unless it's free. You will also need to purchase a foot pedal which will allow you to start and stop the audio with your foot. This will help you transcribe your work twice as fast as it normally would.
