What Trends in Reality Television Tell Us About Humanity and Talent

Reality Television

Kurt Evans
Ever since reality television made its way into the mainstream media, our society has slowly been moving to the realization that there is great talent within each and every one of us. We're finding out that, talent, is not limited to a select few, it's within everyone. This is what trends in television tell us about humanity.

American Idol

It all started when American Idol hit the scene. Your average John or Jane Doe could become a star if they could prove that they could sing in front of qualified judges with experience in the music business. This has motivated a lot of people around the United States to give their singing ability a shot in the big leagues. The prize on American Idol is a recording contract.

Singing Talent

The people that can't hold a note are literally shot down by the truth about their singing talent and told that they should pursue other things.

America's Got Talent

More reality talent shows are making their way into the mainstream and primetime. America's Got Talent is another talent show that is in prime time. On America's Got Talent the prize is a million dollars. The competition is fierce but, if you can prove that you've got the talent, then you can get the cash. The acts that I've seen on America's Got Talent are not limited to a certain genre or activity. I've seen acts of singing, dancing, playing with fire; you name it. If it's an area where a person can have talent in it; then you'll most likely see it on America's Got Talent.

Last Comic Standing

Last Comic Standing is a reality TV show, based on people who are comedians and their ability to make people laugh. Are you funny? The cash prize is $250,000.

So You Think You Can Dance

So You Think You Can Dance is another talent show based on dancing. In this show, it's usually group dancing in a neatly choreographed style. There is a cash prize of $250,000.

Talent Throughout Humanity

As you can see by the trends in Reality Television, there is talent throughout humanity. Talent is something that everyone has and whether or not a person develops that talent, is up to that individual person. Where does your talent lie?

Reality t.v. actually started with the show "Candid Camera". My daughter had to do a report about it, in high school. Reality t.v. has been around for quite awhile.

Of course, the talent type of reality TV is only one of many. Of course, you left off all the other ones like Hell's Kitchen, Project Runway and all those others. Not to mention the ones that are not ability related such as Extreme Makeover or the one I think is really worth more than any of the others - The Biggest Loser.
