- Long sleeve western button up shirt (no pullovers and preferably no short sleeves) in neutral or darker colors (do not wear flashy or neon or extremely bright colors as they can be distracting)
- Denim material dark blue jeans or denim material Khaki pants...do not wear flashy and bright colors in pants either
- Cowboy hat in neutral color or dark color...absolutely no baseball caps
- Western boots or ropers...lace up ropers are fine also
- For women...if you are going to be wearing earrings do not wear long dangling sparkly earrings as these are very distracting especially to judges
- Always tuck shirt into pants and wear a belt...make certain belt is not flashy either
- Chaps and bolos are up to you...some women like to wear soft light scarves pinned together below the neck with a western type clasp or pin
- Women...if you have long hair put it up in a pony tail or up some other way...just remember you are going to be wearing a cowboy style hat
That is pretty much it on western wear. Now let's go on to riding English.
Here are the clothes you will need to ride in English classes in a show. However, these are not for dressage or other higher standard prestigious shows. You will need to check with the show personnel as to the dress code if you are going to be entering these types of events.
- Knee high riding boots...black or very dark blue are standard colors
- Khaki, tan, or other light "brown" color riding breeches (jodhpurs)...these need to fit snug but not be excessively tight to where they make you uncomfortable
- White shirts are the best but light pink or light blue (no neon or flashy colors however) are alright also...men's shirts should just be straight plain shirts while a woman's can have ruffles...however, no multi colored shirts should be worn
- A dark blue or black blazer is a must for English riding...depending on the type of show some people also wear dark burgundy or even very dark grey blazers
- Head gear is a "hard" riding hat in dark blue or black or one to match the color of your blazer
- Again if wearing earrings do not wear dangly flashy ones and put your hair up some way
There you have it. If you are going to be showing horses, remember that your appearance is almost as important as the horse's. I sure hope this helps.
