The type of fence most commonly seen in yards has to be the chain link fence. This fence is very sturdy and also offers your pet a view of the outside world. Make sure the fence is dug at least 6 inches to one foot deep into the ground. This will prevent your pet from escaping underneath. You also need to make sure the fence is high enough so if she jumps she will not be able to clear the fence. For a small dog such as a Pomeranian or Chihuahua the fence need only be about 4 feet high. But if you have larger dogs such as a Great Dane, German Shepherd, or an especially active breed, you will want your fence to be at least 6 feet tall.
Another option of fencing is a wooden fence. The downfall to this material is that it offers your animal no view of anything but wood planks - how boring! If your pet starts to get bored, chances are she will find something to occupy her time (such as digging in your flower bed, rolling in the mud, or chewing on things she isn't supposed to chew on). Another problem with the wooden fences is that they tend to leave a gap between the ground and the base of the fence, if your pet is a digger, you better watch out!
Still another option for you is to make a fence using turkeywire. If you use chickenwire, your pet will easily be able to get through it - turkeywire is much stronger! This is a great option if you are looking for ways to cut costs, still give your pet a view, and reduce the chances of her escaping.
A form of fencing that has become increasingly popular during recent years has been invisible fencing. This requires a professional installation and your pet must wear a collar at all times. The collar works with the invisible fencing - every time your pet gets too close or goes through the invisible fencing, the collar emits a small electric shock. This is supposed to get your pet to not want to leave your yard. The only problem with this option is that if your pet really has her heart set on getting out, no amount of electric shock is going to keep her contained. Some animals are just that determined.
No matter what material you choose to build your fence out of, you need to make sure the fence can close securely. By using a padlock on the gate, this ensures no neighborhood children can leave it open by accident. When choosing the lock, make sure it is for outdoor use so it will not rust, and the best idea is to get a combination lock. This is a great idea for those times when you are in a big hurry and don't have time to go searching for the key. Underneath the gate also needs to be protected just in case your pet sees a way out. Bury bricks under the gate so your pet cannot dig out.
Having a place for your pet to run and play is a wonderful idea. As an owner, it is 100% your responsibility to make sure your pet is safe at all times. It doesn't take long for a dog to dig her way out underneath and out of your yard, so pay attention to her. Frequently inspect your fencing to make sure it isn't getting warped or damaged in any way. Also, be absolutely sure your pet has the most current, up to date identification tags as possible. Make sure all information is still legible, so just in case she does get loose, your chances of being reunited with her are much greater.
