What Type of Soap is Right for My Skin?

Jaipi Sixbear

Did you know there's a soap type for every skin type? When I was growing up we had one choice of soap in our home. I'll give you a hint. It was white, floated on the water and started with an I. It was economical but did nothing for my sensitive skin. Once I left home, I was able to find the right soap for me. What type of soap is right for my skin? That's not important. Let's talk about yours.

What type of soap is right for dry skin? Dry skin needs nourishment. In addition to drinking plenty of water and avoiding excess salt, people with dry skin should use plenty of moisturizer and a moisturizing soap. Look for soaps that contain natural ingredients such as cocoa butter, jojoba, and avocado. Oils such as coconut, olive and sweet almond are beneficial as well.

What soap is best for oily skin? Citrus is wonderful. It strips oils using its natural properties. Look for gel soaps containing lemon, lime orange or grapefruit extracts if your skin is overly moist. You can also soak in herbal baths using lemon balm, rosemary, green tea, peppermint or thyme. All these have cleansing and antibacterial properties.

Sensitive skin requires a mild soap. It also help to use one with healing properties. My favorite is pure glycerin with aloe added. Glycerin soap is very gentle. The aloe helps heal my skin from summer sun damage or winter dryness. I also use pure vitamin E (from a capsule) and sweet almond oil as moisturizers when my eczema acts up.

If you have normal skin, what type of soap should you use? Does it really matter? You might think people with normal skin could use any soap. Actually, those with normal skin do best with neutral soaps. This is because using a soap with too much or too little moisture can offset the perfect balance of their skin. Pure glycerin soaps work best for those with normal skin.

There's even soap for bad circulation or rough skin. If you have bad circulation or rough scaly skin, you might want to try an exfoliating soap. I sometimes use apricot or orange seed as exfoliating ingredients in my homemade soaps. Choose one with natural oats and almond oil if you need softening properties as well.
