What is Uninsured Driver Coverage and Why Do You Need It?

If you already have auto insurance you may want to check your policy to see if it includes uninsured driver coverage. In some states it is mandatory for your car insurance to include uninsured driver coverage. If your state does not require it you can usually add uninsured driver coverage to your auto insurance policy for an additional fee.

Uninsured driver coverage is something that can end up saving you a lot of money in the event that you are in an accident with a driver that has no insurance or not enough insurance. Auto insurance policies that include uninsured driver coverage also cover you in the event of a hit and run type of situation. For instance, if you have your car parked at the mall and come out to discover that someone has sideswiped it, that is a hit and run situation. Not knowing who hit the car means that you have no one else's insurance to pay the cost of the repairs. That is where uninsured driver coverage steps in and covers your damage.

If you are in an accident with a driver that does have auto insurance, but not enough coverage to cover the repairs, then your uninsured driver coverage can take care of the difference. And if you are in an accident with a driver that has no car insurance at all you will not have to worry about the repair costs if you have uninsured driver coverage as part of your auto insurance policy.

If you do not have uninsured driver coverage as part of your auto insurance policy you can usually add it onto your coverage over the phone. Just contact your car insurance company for more information.
