What to Do with Unwanted Gifts

Don't Let Christmas, Birthday and Wedding Gifts Sit in Your Closet!

Angela Tague
It's not uncommon to get a few gifts each year that we just won't use, need or have room to keep. Whether it's a kitchen appliance that has a twin tucked away in the kitchen cabinets, or a sweater that just won't fit, many gifts find their way to the back of a closet or into the garbage to never be thought about again.

Instead of storing or tossing gifts that we can't use, why not pass them on to those who could really appreciate the items? Here is a list of ideas where you can donate your unwanted holiday, wedding, birthday or shower gifts!

Where to Donate Unwanted Gifts: A Homeless Shelter

Homeless shelters often provide a clean set of clothing for their guests. If you received clothing that you simply won't wear, consider donating it to your local homeless shelter. Packages of underwear, socks and bras that aren't your style might be a welcome addition to the shelter's closet. Winter coats, shoes and backpacks are also welcomed.

Where to Donate Unwanted Gifts: A Goodwill or Salvation Army Store

Furniture, clothing and knick knacs are all accepted at the Goodwill and Salvation Army stores. These donations provide inexpensive goods for shoppers, jobs for citizens involved in these programs and much needed inventory for their stores. Many of these donations are tax deductible. Simply ask for a receipt when you drop off your donation.

Where to Donate Unwanted Gifts: Community Action Agencies and Support Centers

Did you get a new cell phone for Christmas? If your previous model is still in good working condition, consider donating it to a local community organization. Many domestic violence shelters, or services for the aging would love to recycle the phone and pass it on to someone who may use it as a lifeline.

Small appliances such as microwaves, coffee makers and toaster ovens are also appreciated by organizations that help people get into their first residence, and build a home. If a family or person has been effected by a fire, homelessness or abuse, these items will help them rebuild their life.

Cookware, bedding and even towels that don't match your home decor are a welcome donation to many community organizations. Start by searching your yellow pages for local outreach agencies, and make a quick call.

Where to Donate Unwanted Gifts: An Animal Shelter

White elephant and gag gifts are common at many gatherings, but did you know those packages of paper towels, and cleaning supplies would be appreciated by your local animal shelter? Consider donating buckets, cleaners and towels to your local humane society or city animal control shelter. They will also appreciate that stack of newspapers piling up in the garage too!
