What to Do with Unwanted Pet Fish

Shannon Frye
There comes a time when you get sick of taking care of fish. When you have seven fish tanks and many more pets, you will not have the time to take care and clean all of the fish tanks. At this point you might decide that you want to get rid of some fish. You're probably wondering how on Earth you are going to get rid of the fish. Do not kill the fish. You can call your local pet stores and they will probably be glad to take your fish, as long as they are free. They will place the fish in a tank and sell them to somebody who wants a new pet fish.

You cannot take your fish and let them go. This is against the law. You will get into a lot of trouble if you are caught letting your fish go. Some people might even tell on you. If you get caught letting your fish go you will have to keep the fish and you will get a very large fine.

You should always contact the pet stores first to see if they will take your fish. If they will not take them I would suggest listing all of the fish in different fish forums and pet classified lists. You will find somebody, somewhere that will want to take care of the fish.

You can also try to sell the fish on ebay. Fish always sell better if they are in a tank so you will want to consider selling the tank with the fish. If you don't care if you get rid of them just list the tank on the site so that you can make back the amount for the listing fee and final value fee. Also make sure that you let the people know if you cannot ship them.

You must place in the shipping section that you accept local pick up only. You will be surprised how many people will search for a tank full of fish through eBay. My boyfriend sold his fish tank on eBay and he had a lot of people bidding against it, in Wisconsin.

If you cannot get the pet stores to take the fish and you've tried to list the fish and tank on ebay than you will have to find another way of getting rid of the fish. You will perhaps ask friends, cousins, neighbors and other people if they want some fish.

You can have a rummage sale and place the fish outside with a big sign that says "FREE." A lot of kids will see the tank and beg their parents to take it home with them. I'm sure you will be able to find somebody that wants to take the fish home with them. If you still have no luck, keep on trying. Eventually you will get rid of the fish.
