What Visitors and Buyers Get at Lake Waramaug CT

Stopover for Good Living and R&R

Linda Curtis
It was once established in 1788, that is Connecticut's Lake Waramaug, since then built up to one of the states "good living and r&r" places to both visit and buy real estate. Recommended for its clear light fall breeze and New England climate, the lake is only a short stop for city dwellers of New York, Long Island and Manhattan and for metropolis residents of Connecticut, or simply for a change of pace. Lake Waramaug is situated within the towns of New Preston, Washington and Kent, also a short drive away from bustling New Milford. The lake front is a true country getaway blessed with the amenities of class, beauty and conveniences.

The campgrounds are located within immediate sight of swimming and the beach remaining open during the summer until Labor Day. The area is maintained meticulously and converted to a park setting for fall walking, touring or boating.

Lake Waramaug State Park is overseen by the State of Connecticut D.E.P., one responsibility including gleaning of the lake to prevent build-up of algae. It's a haven for mallard ducks, Canadian geese and other migratory birds. Lake front properties mostly of New Preston are convenient size dwellings designed especially for boating most with docks, and is maintained absolutely litterless and spotless including the shoreline. The long narrow "S" shape of Lake Waramaug allows a terrific safety zone for speedboat tips and water skiers, the distance of the two long shores close together with a long run of almost three miles from one end of the lake to the other. Both the town of New Preston and the D.E.P. collectively allow a limited amount of speedboats on the lake. Kayaks and canoes seat as many as three and four people and are available for rent. Also, the layout of the lake includes short swim distance safety for capsized sailboaters.

On a random Saturday you'll have to take a seat along the beach area with numerous benches and tables sparsely spaced allowing a lot of room and privacy. Either enjoy a picnic or residents and tourists can take in a crew practice or rowing regatta by area schools such as the elite Gunnery School, Kent School, Simsbury High School, and Old Lyme High School, all high schools operating crew and rowing team competitions. Founders Cup awards held at Lake Waramaug have been featured in Rowing Magazine.

There are properties for sale, of course assimilated with the Lake Waramaug area prestige. Properties are impeccable adhering to high standard zoning and peer responsibilities. Essentially, the entire area is picture perfect.

Nearby attractions within a few miles include the upscale Potter and Slack Fine Arts Gallery in Marbledale Center. Original oil landscape paintings of Connecticut have been available for public and appointment viewing in amounts as much as $10,000 by local active artists. Some of the traditional-style exhibits during the tourist season and the holidays by the locals are noteworthy. Another gallery stop is the Washington Art Gallery in Bryan Memorial Square offering a turnaround of theme exhibitions announced in local newspaper bulletin boards. Famous pottery designers, authors, and celebrities, as well as prominent people boast year-round and summer homes in the area and in fact, Washington residents own properties of highest average value in the state of Connecticut according to Consumer Reports magazine.

An idyllic, rustic and relaxing place to visit, starting from Route 45 off the main Route 202, a drive around the entire lake is six miles. One town beach is at the mouth of the lake in New Preston and one beach is located along an opposite shore in the state park area or part of Kent. The state park area is approximately 95 square miles and was originally conserved and purchased as a state park in 1920.

There are three bed and breakfast inns including The Hopkins Inn, The Birches and The Boulders Inn. Reminiscent of Federal and Victorian architecture and detailing of those times, some inns maintain fireplaces, colonial furnishings, etc. The area is non-isolated and was built up from a history of affluent residents and visitors.

The Litchfield Hills Travelers Bureau has free brochures available with information on local sights including Lake Waramaug and area. Some stops include the Hickory Stick Book Shop, Marbledale Pub, roadside stands and food stops, Washington Town Green, historic New England churches with tour choirs, outdoor crafts, and publicized eagle watches at Shepaug Dam. There are also stables for horseback riding as Litchfield County's things to do, unconnected to the lake activities. The Elephant's Trunk antique market is held outdoors on weekends further south along Route 202 in New Milford.

Clear and open, the Lake Waramaug area has easy access and conveniences. Access around the entire lake and minimal traffic allow a peaceful place for walking your dog, riding horseback, biking, jogging, etc. The public boat launches are at the Route 45 New Preston town beach and at the state park area beach. There's a lot of area, space between dwellings are generous and the lake doesn't have the typical overcrowding and congestion some areas do. Lake Waramaug is really well maintained and has stamina.

The hot tip of this small community with residents fluctuating between 650 to 1,100 people yearly is it's a filming location for the movie Friday the Thirteenth and is being considered for Friday the Thirteenth II.
