Wall Street refers to the financial district of New York City named after an eight-block-long street running from Broadway to South Street on the East River in lower Manhattan. Over time, the name Wall Street has become way to describe the financial markets of the United States as a whole.
It is the home of the New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ, the New York Mercantile Exchange, the New York Board of Trade, and the former American Stock Exchange. It represents elitism and power politics to many today. It's the one place in the United States other the Washington D.C. that you blame for all yours and the countries problems.
During the mortgage mess, Wall Street financing was blamed as one of the causes of our countries financial meltdown, The government of the United states with the Troubled Asset Relief Program bailed out the banks and financial backers with billions of dollars, but the bailout was often criticized as politically motivated and was criticized by journalists as well as the public.
In recent years images of Wall Street and its figures have loomed large and never in a positive manner. Still we have not answered the one main question of, "What is Wall Street?"
Wall Street is not all the mean heartless money lenders like Shylock whom demanded a pound of flesh for his support nor Gordon Gekko of whom "greed is good". It was until the recession hit once hundreds of thousands of people, hard working people, janitors, street cleaners, window washers, food service workers, secretaries, sales staff, and on and on that made up those that worked on Wall Street.
Still what is Wall Street? Today if you look at the attacks on Wall Street in congress in the press and now on the streets you would think it was nothing but the worst place on this planet. The one place in the United States you blame for all yours and the countries problems.
Still what is the correct answer to what is Wall Street?
There is no one directly in the media or a politician that will give you and honest answer to this question because it doesn't server their purpose to do such. It has become a political punching bag for both the right and the left.
I do know what Wall Street is. It's your Grandparent's, your parents, firemen, police officers, and school teachers unions. It is everyone that has an insurance policy or a pension and retirement fund.
Wall Street is Main Street and what happens there affects everyone in every corner of this country. On main street good men make errors in judgments as do bad men.
Wall Street has become the wiping boy for all that is wrong in our country. Wealthy fat cats that just want to get wealthier. This used to be called the American dream, now being wealthy is being made something to be ashamed of. They have become someone to take from, to repay them for what they did to you and the country.
Repay them for all the bad business decisions they made. Decisions made often at the request of the same politicians that have joined in the we must destroy Wall Street.
When you destroy Wall Street and that is where all that in the streets is heading for what will replace it? A government ran financial district. Our government can't even balance a check book and they would be expected to handle all the financial business in our nation.
The wealthy don't own Wall Street. While they may work there and are a symbol to lash out against in as simplest terms as possible all those that are trying to shut Wall Street down own it.
It's your Grandparent's, your parents, firemen, police officers, and school teachers unions United Auto Workers. It is everyone that has an insurance policy or a pension and retirement fund that actually own Wall Street.
What is Wall Street? You are Wall Street.
