What to Do in Wasilla Alaska

Wasilla Alaska is a relatively small town (population of 65,000) located roughly 45 miles from Alaska's Largest city, Anchorage. It might be a small town but there is still lots to do. From city celebrations, to camping and fishing. Wildlife viewing and berry picking, Wasilla is a town surrounded by amazing mountain views

For a taste of history you can visit the Dorothy Page Museum and Visitors Center. A community hall built in 1931, and restored to a museum in 1967. Inside the museum grounds are several other buildings that make up the historic town site, including Wasilla's first schoolhouse. Or you can tour the Transportation Museum about 5 miles outside of Wasilla. It contains trains, airplanes, and old cars.

For recreational fun there is the Multi-Use sports complex which includes a NHL sized Ice Arena, an indoor artificial turf court, a running/ walking track, and 3 meeting rooms. There is also an outdoors skating park located in central Wasilla, next to several volley ball, basketball and tennis courts. A track, outdoor amphitheater and a large children's playground.

If your looking for races in Wasilla, well you picked the best town to be in. We are the official home of the Iditarod race and the Iron dog race. The Iditarod being in March reaches from Wasilla to Nome, and the Iron dog runs a similar path from Wasilla to Nome then to Fairbanks. The Iron dog being on snow machines. To correspond with the world famous Iditarod race. Wasilla also has a festival, that includes parties, dance competitions, talent shows, a bonfire and pig roast outside, An art show, and fireworks to name a few of the events that go on from Late February to Early March. The last day of the festival ends with the race start.

Other events in Wasilla include Military Day where there is a public lunch in the park to honor our military personnel, a Fishing Derby from May to July, and an Arbor day celebration.

Within Driving distance from Wasilla is a wealth of places to visit. There is a Museum of Northern Adventure in Talkeetna, telling about history of Alaska. A Tsunami Observatory in Palmer. The Reindeer farm outside of Palmer. The musk ox Farm north of palmer. Knik Glacier north east of Palmer, Accessible by Air boat, The Matanuska Glacier at mile 110 on the Glen highway, accessible by hiking. There is Hatcher's Pass which features Independence Mine and state Historical Park, having spectacular views and trails its a beautiful places to visit. Berry Picking is also prime in late summer in this area. Hunting and fishing are but a few miles up the highway, and bird watching is a great idea. You can see many different types of duck and geese, as well as Eagles can be sighted year round.

There are several campgrounds to choose from, the Matanuska River park, Lake Lucille park and Little Susitna River park, has RV hookups and camping spaces. Fish Creek park is a day use area with access to Fish Creek

Although its a small town that may not look like it has much to offer, Wasilla is a great place for tourists and visitors to check out and enjoy. From mountains to rivers, and even a bit of a beach within driving distance, its really a beautiful place to visit with the offer of diversity that will appease any tastes.
