What to Watch?

T.V. At 4am & Beyond!

Audrey Star Josefek
I am a stay-at-home wife, newly married, with a husband about to start a graveyard-shift job, so of course I am on a partial-insomniac schedule--& thus up at 4:20am in the morning, feeling like it is 3pm in the afternoon.
I spend some of the night writing, some doing housework, & then much of it watching our plasma T.V. I have a sort of routine, & have been turning off the T.V. when I'm not watching something exceptional, so I don't waste electricity or time.
I am patiently waiting for the original Star Trek series to come on at 5am (CST), but I figured I'd switch on the tube to see what was playing now. It's a wonder all the stuff flying around the T.V. this early in the morning!

Channels 29, 30 (our Disney), 31, 39, 43 (FX), 47 (Travel), 49, & 59 (SciFi) are nothing but what falls under the heading of "paid programming". Now this could be anything from an infomercial about the newest exercise gadget with some old celebrity no one even remembers--to a pitch about selling local real estate & making millions upon millions of $$ right from your living room! Sad to say, I often get caught up watching some new gadget being displayed, & even feel the inkling to buy one every so often (you do it too-stop denying it!).
Channel 70 on our T.V. shows up as our TV-Guide channel--one of the ones I am constantly turning to, & an actual helpful channel. It simply shows you what is on, & what is coming on in the next hour. It also displays obnoxious infomercials on the top half of the screen during the wee hours of the morning.
My hubby likes to slowly flick through every channel to find something, but I prefer to know what is on, & what I want to watch after, & where it is. Even if I have to see the add for the newest Nutri-system as well.
Also across the top of the channel listings, as they run through again--there is a local weather listing, with pictures! Yay 73*!
Channel 21 is QVC, & 22 is the HSN. These never change. Ever. And if you accidentally click on one of them, you WILL be watching it for a while, & you MAY just end up buying something--probably something you don't need at all--if you're not careful. Home Shopping Network seems to be the more expensive of the two, though, for reference.
Channel 221 is seemingly all paid programming right now too, but that's ok, because we don't actually get that channel; Oddly enough--there are several high numbered channels listed after our TV-Guide (70) channel, that we don't actually get. So I don't know why they are listed.
Channel 15 is our local EWTN, a channel my husband would prefer to be on all day (we are Catholic), but which at this time of the morning would undoubtedly bore me.
Channel 38 is AMC (American Movie Channel), & is playing some 1960 movie entitled "Murder, Inc."--which obviously no one saw, hence it being on at 4-ish in the morning.
Channel 45 is TVLand, which is playing "I Love Lucy"--decent TV, finally!
Channel 53 is Comedy Central, & paid programming again!--So is 65, the Food Network. You would be surprised how many pointless things they can show at 4-ish in the morning!
Channel 242 is Golf...Wow. They actually have a full-time golf channel? That's sad (no offense to you golfers.
Our Channel 2 is all in Spanish, & since I do not speak Spanish, I don't think I've ever gone there...

I do know that one night my husband couldn't believe I hadn't seen the classic S.King movie, "Misery", & was glad it was on in the late hours for us to watch together. Except, not until it started did we realize we were on a Spanish channel, without subs, & couldn't understand any of it. So needless to say--"Misery" is on my list of classics to re-visit from my local Blockbuster!

Channel 58 is SPEED (the channel, not the drug, weirdo!), & is playing...guess what?! Paid Programming!! Isn't that educational?! It's something about some sort of evolutional version of Turtle Wax...That's important for those people up at 4am, most def.
Channel 55 is the History channel, which only is playing Paid Programming for another half an hour (they wake up early
Channel 66 is E! & playing something called "Bloomburg Television"--which is as much as I can determine--the stock exchange?! Which obviously people only pay attention to in the wee hours of the morning!
One of my all time faves, Channel 6--is simply entitled "Jewelry Television". It oddly has half an hour breaks on the guide, at every show--but they are all titled the same, & all day this station advertises gems. Which is nice, & is pretty to watch (right now they are showing a .30ct Min 5mm round Tanzanite--a beautiful blue one! For only $24.99! Was $45.00, so it's a steal!), but really people--how long can a person watch a tiny, single gemstone on a white background/table, eternally spinning?

The world is starting to wake up now, though. Sure enough. In a little while, "Sesame Street" will be on our local PBS Channel 3. "CBS Morning News" will be starting on Channel 12. "John Hagee Today" will be opening up on Channel 20, & "Joyce Meyer" on Channel 28. "Becker" is on Channel 25 (USA), and Full House will be on 34 (Nik). VH1, Channel 40, will be showing continual "videos" for the next hour at least.

I have learned a lesson in the time it took to write this article: it doesn't pay to turn the T.V. on before 5am.
That said, I shall retreat to good old Channel 45 (TVLand), & good old Star Trek.

I'd have to agree that it doesn't pay to turn the tv on before 5 a.m. I'd rather read a book anyway.
