What We Can Learn from the Olympics

Mark Cook
What a great opportunity to watch the Olympics and see all the countries of the world together with their finest athletes, smiling and proudly displaying all of their flags. This is such a pleasure to see.

What a great world it would be if people understood that we're all God's children. If we take a look at the thousands of people represented in the Olympics, we can see that they all have two eyes, a nose, a mouth, two ears -and they all have the same organs on the inside, regardless of size, color or persuasion. That's because we're all God's children.

Young children from any culture or country can be brought up to be wonderful people with a purpose and who want to help those around them. I could take any child, regardless of color, race, religion or creed, and if I gave that individual love, friendship, a purpose and a good family, he or she would grow up to be a good person.

Why do we fight with one another? It costs more money to destroy and kill than it does to give people a home, an education and a life. If we spent money on good things like that instead of on wars and destruction, what a beautiful world it would be!

If all religions believe the same basic principle of "love thy neighbor as thyself," why do people fight with each other and kill one another because of religion? If people are of a different religion or color, they are often ostracized. In some religions, other religions are not tolerated and must be destroyed. Why is this so?

History has shown conclusively that we can't ever control the world, but if we work together, the world can be beautiful. When we look at the people represented in the Olympics, we can see people of all different colors, races, religions and persuasions coming together for a common purpose and goal.

I hope that the people in the Olympics won't just focus on being winners and not appreciate working with the other athletes. If enough people in enough countries feel that they are superior to others, there will be bad consequences, and they might start thinking that others of different religions or races should be converted or destroyed.

I hope everyone will realize that this is a beautiful world and that God made it a beautiful world. It will only stay this way if we work together.
