What Do We Do Mr.?

Too Many Questions

Gary S. Williams
We started a new assignment in class today.

I wasn't even finished passing out the handouts when the first questions came.

Student- What is this?
Teacher- A handout.
S- About what?
T- What did we just do?
S- I don't know.
T- Then read the directions.
S- But Mr.
T- Read the directions!
S- Geeze.
T- What does it say?
S- Pick one battle from Beowulf.
T- Next.
S- Write a newspaper article about this battle. Which battle?
T- One from the story. Who was Beowulf?
S- A hero.
T- Why?
S- Because he killed a monster.
T- Which monster?
S- Grendel.
T- And he was?
S- A demon who personified evil.
T- Yes, what else.
S- He killed people.
T- Why?
S- He was a demon.
T- We already said that. What else?
S- He was mad.
T- No.
S- He was jealous.
T- Eureka! Jealous of what?
S- The king had a party.
T- Yes, they were celebrating in the mead hall. Then what.
S- He killed them.
T- All of them?
S- No just a bunch each night.
T- Until when?
S- Until Beowulf took him out!
T- Please include the details that answer:
T- Who?
S- Beowulf and Grendel.
T- What?
S- They fought.
T- When?
S- I don't know.
T- Be sure to look it up.
S- OK, OK, then what?
T- Where?
S- In the mead hall of Hrothgar.
T- Yeah, you remember!
S- I guess I do.
T- Now, why?
S- Grendel was killing people and Beowulf was indebted to the King,
T- Hrothgar.
S- Yeah, that guy. So Beowulf killed the monster.
T- And, what did Beowulf take.
S- Huh?
T- No, Huh. What did Beowulf take?
S- Oh yeah, the arm.
T- Good. Why.
S- As a trophy, like mine for judo!
T- Exactly. Told you that you're not a dummy.
T- Go write this down before you forget.
T- Thanks for coming to get help.
S- Oh yeah, whatever.
