What Should I Wear? A Bible Study for Christian Women

Amy Kreger
I am not acquainted with any woman who truly does not care what she looks like. Even those of us who are relegated to sweat pants and scrunchies until noon wish that we had more time to take care of ourselves. All women want to look beautiful and attractive. It is important for us as Christian women to dress in a way that makes us feel good and also pleases God. Though it may sound archaic in today's "Anything Goes" society, modesty and femininity are still important principles for women to follow. Here are a few principles from the Bible about our appearance and what we should wear:

1. Strive to please the Lord with what you wear. I Corinthians 10:31 says, "Whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God." You and your spouse are not the only people who care what you look like, God cares too.

2. Dress in taste and style that will bring honor to the Lord. As a Christian person, you represent Christ. II Corinthians 5:20 says that "...we are ambassadors for Christ."

3. Be pleasing to the Lord. I Thessalonians 2:4 says, "Not as pleasing men, but God."

4. Avoid clothing that focuses attention on self and dims the beauty of the Lord as seen through you. Galatians 2:20 says that Christ lives in you. Can people see past what you are wearing to the One Who is inside of you?

5. Clothing should be attractive, not shabby or drab. Proverbs 31:22 indicates that if you are a Christian woman, you are a daughter of the King. Don't spend a fortune on your wardrobe, but do make sure what you wear is clean and in good taste.

6. Don't lower your standards in dress to conform to the "style" of the moment. Fads come and go, but our appearance should not be based on what is popular in the world. Romans 12:2 says, "And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind..."

7. Flaunting clothing for pride or appearances sends the wrong message. When you meet someone, his or her focus should be on the person you are, not what you put on your person. Philippians 2:3 says, "Let nothing be done through strive or vain glory..."

8. Select clothing that is nice and appropriate for the occasion, "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel..." I Timothy 2:9-10.

9. Dressing revealingly cheapens our testimony for God. "For we are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body..." I Corinthians 6:20.

10. Following the fashion whims occurring in the world consumes time, finances and energy, don't give in! I Corinthians 2:31 says, "...for the fashion of this world passeth away."

Many times we are so busy that we don't take time to consider what we are wearing. I know sometimes I tend to throw on whatever is on top in my drawer! However, by using these principles as a filter, we can be sure that what we wear speaks well of us and of our God.

  • Clothes should draw attention to the face and character of a woman.
  • Conforming to fads will waste your money and bring little satisfaction.
Times and cultures change, but God's principles have not. The principles set in the Bible for our dress are as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago. Modesty and femininity are the rule.

tried wondering what Jesus would do as a man or woman? I am not perfect but I do know what is right , what is wrong, what I have to turn away from so I don't lust after another person, and how to strive for a holy life. appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

    —Romans 12:1
Now I challenge you with a challenge that has been challenging to myself...
This scripture can be taken many ways..You decide..
25"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
26"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? 28And why do you worry

Also is not the chubby girls fault nor the attractive girls fault she is wearing the dress the chubby girl wants. In this case the chubby girl in order to protect herself and insecurities should ask God for help, not let anyone blame the thinner girl. There's is two sides of every story but God judges the heart, only him! So wether a person is wearing dirty or clean sparkiling clothes, expensive or inexpensive clothes, a suit on sunday or a baseball cap, it is God who should judge. As a christ follower our job is to correct our own MOTIVES and DESIRES of our hearts by searching and looking towards JESUS as much as possible. From there the spirit will lead us in our walk with Christ, he will speak through us when he feels a brother or sister needs to be corrected through people and will speak directly to them when he doesn't want us to do anything with the situation. Has anyone ever thought of praying for those people rather than thinking of alternate outcomes? Has anyone ever t

I agree strongly with Greg's statement. Are you a luke warm christian? Im getting hotter but I am not a Hot christ follower yet. You guys are right when you say God loves us no matter what, but he cares about every single detail and every moment of our lives. Do you not think it pains him when he see's someone claiming to be living a holy life , with the breasts showing in an inappropriate way?Songs of songs is between a man and a woman before and during marriage, he talks about her breasts . How do you feel when you are sharing scriptures and at the same time a man is staring down your shirt? Also is not the chubby girls fault nor the attractive girls fault she is wearing the dress the chubby girl wants. In this case the chubby girl in order to protect herself and insecurities should ask God for help, not let anyone blame the thinner girl. @Talor: I read the article and I'm still trying to find where it says dress up in Sunday best. What I got from it is that you should be clean, modest and neat. Didn't see anything about wearing expensive clothes.

Great article. As a christian woman I have often thought about if what I am wearing is pleasing to God. Good thoughts!

  • Talor2/9/2010

Well I think I'm a couple years behind on this post but I personally have always despised the concept of Christians wearing their 'Sunday's best" to church. I'm pretty sure I just read that the wealthiest have the smallest kingdoms in heaven. How can wearing expensive cloths that display your beauty impress God or show the "Glory of God"? He already expressed wealth not impressive and is a result of selfish behavior. Can't be wealthy if you share all you have with those in need. So if god's not impressed then who is? Obviously its the other members of the church, meaning they dress up to impresses people only. The flip side to that is the poor overweight girl who saw that dress in the store last week and wanted it but hurt inside b/c she knew she'd never fit in it. So.. when she goes to church to be with a god who doesn't care what she looks like or what in her bank account and come face to face with a beautiful woman wearing the dress she so wanted, how is that to make her fee

Well Pen It does matter what we wear. You say that the bible is thousands of years old but the constitution is old too. So what are you not going to follow the constitution because its "old."

The bible states that Mat 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

If you as a female are wearing clothing that is making a man lust after you ( pants low neck lines and etc) you making a man commit adultery in his heart. The bible also states the " Therefore to him that knoweth to good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin"- James 4:17

So by wearing suductive clothing your not already making someone sin in their heart, your sinning also.

Why would advertise something that is not for sale?

Same way about womens dress, why advertise something not for sale.

We are lively in a corrupt generation. The bible says

"Jesus Christ, the same yesterday today and forever."

In your closing you say that clothing should "speak well of us and our god" well, the article does reveal far more than clothing might about "your god" and the accompanying dogma and it isn't good...
