What to Wear to Your Child's Graduation Ceremony

Congratulations, you survived your child's stressful teen years and have the opportunity to witness him or her graduate. The stars of the day are the students, so the pressure to find the right outfit is light, but still an issue. As in any formal event, shopping for just the right outfit, no matter how basic, can often be trickier than anticipated. It seems when I want to find a sparkly top, all I run across are plain garments and vice versa. Simplify the process through online shopping. The following tips offer a basic guideline for finding the perfect outfit to wear to your child's graduation ceremony.

Listen to the weatherman.
Graduation attire should be geared to the season and temperature. Typically graduation ceremonies are held in late May through June. Depending upon the area of the country you are in, this could mean mild to scorching hot weather. Take into account the location of the proceedings. If the ceremony takes place indoors, the air conditioning could make that season-appropriate sundress a chilly choice.

A lightweight sheath, like the offerings from Jessica London, can be paired with a trendy cropped cardigan if necessary.

Color me happy, but not hysterical. Bright colors are fine to wear to a graduation ceremony, but leave the flashy at home. Sparkles, sequins and fringe will be distracting. You want to blend nicely into the crowd, not stand out like a neon sign. Look for a trendy color like coral that works well with most skin tones.

Keep it rated PG.
Avoid any wardrobe malfunctions by steering clear of low-cut tops, mini skirts and anything too tight. The day should highlight your child's accomplishment, not draw attention to your body. You can look fashionably feminine without succumbing to frumpy in a stylish shirt dress. The belted waistband on the Calvin Klein Stretch Cotton Shirtdress will highlight curves, while the skirt is comfortable and lady-like.

Accessorize with restraint.
Remember you will be posing for pictures at some point during the day. Standing next to your gown-clad graduate should be a polished version of yourself that will not look dated or outrageous ten years from now. Choose classic jewelry over a too-trendy or flashy piece. A silky scarf in a flattering color can be loosely wrapped over shoulders to add color. Try one of Chico's silky scarf choices for a custom-made look.

Step carefully.
When planning your outfit give special attention to your shoes. This is not simply a fashion tip. It is important to be aware of where you will be standing throughout the day. Ceremonies that are held on the lawn or in a football stadium require shoes that will not leave you stabbing the ground with every step. Stilettos are pretty, but not practical in this case. Consider a pair of dressy wedges, like the J. Renee Lucie Women's Wedge to keep you standing on solid ground.
