What to Wear for Graduation

Jane Vee
Graduation usually takes place on one of the hottest days of the year or worse, on the wettest day of the year. What do you wear to a graduation to look good for the cameras and still be comfortable. The key to surviving any lengthy event is comfort, but yet you need to look classic and timeless. Here are a few ideas of what to wear on graduation to not only please yourself, but everyone else for years to come.

Graduates:

If you are in the graduating class, the school may want you to wear certain colors under your graduation gowns. If that is the case, look for light, flowing material that will keep you cool and abide by dress code guidelines.

If you can wear anything you want under your graduation gown, remember that graduation is about showing your class and pride. You want to be remembered for your accomplishments, not as the kid that showed up in swim wear with new tattoos.

For any graduate wearing a white or light colored gown, remember the gowns are see through. Everyone will be able to see your attire. For a white graduation gown, it is best to wear a light solid color. The graduate may even want to wear white to look their best. Girls can wear a white classic straight dress or even a white dress with layers. The design of the clothes will reflect the time period and your choice of style. You may want to go with a style that is timeless. For shoes, white pumps or flats will be comfortable and timeless. There is a greater risk of falling or tripping in heels.

Guys who are wearing a white gown for graduation can pick a white collared dress shirt and even white pants or a light colored pair of pants. A light gray pair of pants would look nice and will not be too easy to see under the white gown. White dress shoes would look best, but if they cannot be found, black dress shoes will suffice.

What about graduates hair? Hair is actually important because there will be pictures taken at graduation and you want to look your best. Simple, natural styles are best due to weather conditions. Do not spike your hair or try to make it stand up. Do not wear a hairstyle you will need tons of hair spray in. When your hair gets wet you want to be able to easily fix it. Wear your hair down or pulled into easy styles. Make sure you bring a comb or brush with you.

Graduation attendees:

You are so excited about your loved one graduating. You are there to show support and your pride in what your loved one has accomplished. Show your respect by dressing appropriately. You don't want to stand out in the graduation pictures as some crazy person. Wear timeless or classic looks.

The best colors for graduation attendees to wear are any light colors especially if graduation ceremonies are being held outside. Bright colors attract bugs. Dark colors absorb heat. Wear a light material that is loose on you. Guys, if you are wearing a jacket with a suit, choose something light. You do not want to roast the whole time.

Hair is an important part of your style. If you are going to be in the rain or there is a chance you are going to sweat and your hair will droop, you may want to take along hair sprucing products. You can take a comb, brush, hairdryer, curling iron, hair spray and whatever else you may need as long as your bag is big enough to hold it while you are carrying it around at the ceremony.

Before you go, make sure your hair is arranged in a manner that you will be able to easily fix. If you are comfortable with your hair, you will be more comfortable at the graduation ceremony. Remember there will be pictures, so choose a style that you can live with for years to come as photos are shared from the photo albums.
