What to Wear for a Job Interview: Creating a Good First Impression
How to Dress Professionally for a Job Interview
Appearances truly do tell a lot about a person, and how you look and present yourself during your interview will likely be an important factor when your potential employer makes his final decision about whether or not to hire you. An interview process is no different from a marketing campaign. You are there to sell yourself, just as you would sell a product or service to a potential buyer.
When attempting to determine what to wear for a job interview, it is always safe to opt for something conservative. Dressing professionally shows your potential employer that you are serious about the position you are applying for, and lets them know you care about your personal appearance and the impression you will make on clients and co-workers if given the job. Dressing properly for your interview shows you have pride and confidence in yourself and your abilities, and that you understand the nature of the work you hope to do.
What to Wear for a Job Interview: Selecting Your Clothes
Both men and women should stick to suits whenever possible, preferably in dark, solid colors. Navy and black are always safe choices, but grey works nicely as well. Shoes should be conservative, in good condition, and men should choose dark socks in black or navy. Jewelry should be kept to a minimum, and nails should be trimmed. Women should avoid heavy makeup, brightly colored nail polish, and hairstyles that block their eyes or face.
Hats and cell phones should be left at home by both men and women. Heavy colognes and perfumes should also be avoided. Overwhelming cologne has been cited by experts as one of the worst offenses committed by those interviewing for a job. While it is wise to use a breath mint just before meeting with your potential employer, you must be careful to spit it out before the introduction. Make sure your hair is combed, your clothes are straightened, and that you have a copy of your resume in your hand.
Dressing well and knowing what to wear for a job interview does not guarantee you the job, but dressing poorly and making a bad first impression will likely result in your resume being discarded the moment you walk out of the interview.

Post a CommentGreat article....
What?!? No cell phones? But how can I keep up with my text messaging during the interview? Won't the interviewer think I'm not very important or well-connected if I don't get a call or two? OMG.
Good tips. I'd hate to have my potential employer faint due to excess perfume!
Great tips !....very useful article for all candidates.....I see you have changed your avatar !!
Well done~!
I could learn from this. My last job interview I went in with bright blue hair and neon green knee high stripped socks. I did surprisingly get the job though, she said it was solely on charisma and that I had to change my appearance by the time I started. XD
Good info. to have.
Interesting and useful article.
Great article Sandi!:) Chewing-gum is another big no no. And the wearing of heavy perfume or aftershave is indeed a downright put-off.
Excellent article (and seriously under-rated when I got to it. Hmmm.). One other tip I've heard is to dress for one level above the job you're applying for; so that for a secretarial position, you might dress for an administrative assistant, and so on. I'm not sure if that really makes a difference, but your tips are all solid. And I've been on both sides of that hiring desk enough to know! Nice tight writing.
Good reminders for those job hunters out there. You'd be amazed how many people don't remember how important first impressions are. I used to interview people who would come to their interview for a professional job wearing jeans and flip flops (shaking head.)
