Know Your School's Requirements
The most important piece of advice that I can give aspiring musical theatre students is to know the requirements for the school or schools you are applying to, that includes knowing their dance audition clothing requirements. Many of the top colleges have stringent requirements for dance audition apparel. Make sure you follow the school's requirements to a tee. Your clothing choice for the dance audition is not the time to show your individuality. If the school requests black jazz pants or tights be certain to wear black jazz pants or tights.
Avoid Shorts and Sweatpants for Musical Theatre Dance Auditions
Not every college posts clothing requirements for the dance audition. If you are auditioning for a school that does not specify what to wear to the dance portion of the audition you do have some leeway. My advice and the advice of experts is to stick with appropriate dance attire and to avoid shorts (distracting) and sweatpants (unprofessional).
Create a Smooth Line with Matching Tights and Dance Shoes
Purchase jazz pants or tights and wear a form fitting tee or leotard. Purchasing proper jazz shoes or ballet shoes is also a wise investment for the aspiring musical theatre major. Experts recommend that you wear the same color pants and dance shoes as that helps to create a smoother line.
Fit and Comfort Are Important
Aspiring musical theatre majors are highly urged to spend some time shopping for dance audition attire. Comfort and fit are important when auditioning. No aspiring performer wants to blow a dance audition due to his dance shoes being too tight.
