What to Wear Under Your Graduation Gown

Most schools have dressing guidelines or requirements for their graduating students' attire. If the school leaves it up to you, what do you wear under your gown? You do not want to be remembered for dressing like a bum on your graduation day. You need to dress classy, show some respect for yourself and your accomplishments. There will be time to act like a fool later.

Here are a few tips about what to wear under your graduation gown.

First, the gowns are made out of thin material so choose similar or lighter colors than the graduation gown. You can see bright colors through the light gown material. You will want to wear something that will not blast through the gown and stand out. You may want to wear colors similar to the graduation gown color.

If the graduation color is white, you can wear white clothes underneath. Young ladies will look classic in white dresses with white pumps or flats. Wearing heels makes tripping more viable. Young men can wear white shirts and pants or light gray pants under white gowns. White dress shoes for men would look great, but if they are too hard to find black or brown dress shoes will suffice.

If the graduation gown is yellow, you may be able to wear light colors or pastels under the graduation gown. Wearing yellow attire to graduation will not look classic or timeless. The color will stand out in all the graduation pictures.

Secondly, do not wear bright colors. Bright colors attract bugs. They will think you are a flower and all through the graduation ceremony you will be swatting. Save the bright colors for an indoor occasion.

Chances are good it is going to be hot and you will want to wear clothes that do not make you hotter. Look for clothing that is made out of light or thin material. Remember that white reflects sunlight and darker colors absorb the sun's heat. You may want to wear light colors if not white, and wear material that is breezy.

Try to choose clothes that do not wrinkle easily. You do not want to wear clothes that wrinkle on the car ride to the graduation ceremony. You also do not want to be fussing with your clothes when pictures are being taken.

Although jewelry may make an outfit, remember that less is more. Do not wear so much jewelry that years down the road someone asks you if you were a rap star. You want to keep it simple and elegant.

Keep your look simple, sharp, and classic. You will be happy you did later.
