What to Do While Planning for College

Are you currently a high school student or a recent high school graduate thinking about going to a university? If so, there are many steps you need to take in order to successfully prepare. You will learn how to plan for college.

You can work toward gaining knowledge that will help you while you are in high school. For example, you can take college prep classes or transfer to an advanced institution that heavily focuses on getting students ready for an institution of higher learning.

If you have one, you should see the school guidance counselor. He or she can probably steer you in the right direction in regard to what you should take in college based on your interests, grades, personality and skill aptitude.

If you have not already done so, you need to buy or check out a good study guide. College is much harder than high school.

You must become used to being a mature person who does not act wildly, come to class late, pick on other students or fall out of a chair while laughing. Universities are not very tolerant of disruptive behavior.

How about attending college fairs? They can give you a good idea of what the various schools offer.

Realistically, you must apply to colleges during your high school senior year. Be prepared to write a brief essay detailing what you are good at and what makes you a qualified student. The institution you pick should depend on whether you want to stay at home or whether you want to move out of your area and reside on the campus dorm.

Do you want to attend an elite Ivy League school such as Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth or Princeton? If so, you should study for and then take and do well on the ACT and SAT tests. You can also help your chances of getting in by doing extracurricular activities at your school.

You must financially prepare for college before you finish the twelfth grade. You should work part-time and summer jobs and do what it takes to earn a scholarship or grant.

It is good to talk with those who have begun or completed the higher learning process. They might be able to give you good advice.

Once you enroll, you must be ready to hit the ground running when classes start. You should find out what books you need and take a tour of the campus.
