What is Woot? How Can a Woot Off Save You Money?

Why EBayers Love Woot

Sylvia Cochran
Woot is a cross between savvy marketing and Internet hype building. Headquartered in Carrollton, Texas, this online retailer has found a way of getting consumers to come back time and again in search of the ultimate deal of the day.

If you are hoping for an elaborate storefront with a wide variety of products and great deals, you are going to be sadly disappointed. Instead, you are going to find one (count 'em!) item. No more, no less. The item will be on sale for 24 hours or until the available quantity is sold out.

You must decide now and those trained by eBay to put things on their watch list will be certainly disappointed when they come back the next day. Additionally, depending on the popularity of the item, you want to check in as close to midnight as possible to make sure you get first dibs on the item currently featured. There are no rain checks, backorders, or holds. There is no return for buyer's remorse and no, you are not supposed to return the item if it does not work.

This does not make Woot sound like a great business model, does it? Perhaps not, but diehard Woot aficionados will check back periodically until they see orange flashing lights on the home page. This is the signal for a Woot Off and if you have never experienced the frenzy that ensues when the current deal is about to expire, you will then!

During a Woot Off the current item is close to being sold out. Rather than waiting until midnight to list the next item that will be for sale, Woot is going to list the next item immediately following the close of the current sale.

Spy a hat looking icon on the page and you are treated to an item that is not available anywhere else but only on Woot. Perhaps it is a prototype or maybe a made to order gizmo that was never picked up by the customer. It could also be a product launch. Unlike the "as seen on TV" items, there is no "as seen on Woot" store in your local mall.

If you still don't think that buying from Woot makes sense, consider the fact that Woot imposes a three item maximum on its orders. As of the writing of this article there was a Klipsch Quintet SL 5-piece Home Theater Speaker System for sale at a cost of $429.99 plus $5 shipping. Compare the same system at Best Buy for $799.99 and you know where eBayers get their wares and why Woot can save you a serious bundle of cash!

But wait, there's more! Woot is your Internet retailer with an attitude! There is the BOC sale where a closed grab bag of items is sold for $1. Sometimes it is junk but other times it might actually be rather valuable. These special deals usually sell out in under a minute and it pays to keep Woot on the screen.

I understand the confusion, Unwirklich. Actually, the stuff on Woot is so cheap that some folks running eBay stores or auctions buy their wares on Woot, tag on $100 or more, and then resell them straight on eBay.

So woot is similar to ebay? or like a retailer for ebay items... This article caught my greedy attention, but confused me as to what woot is.
