Let's just say that we stopped using gas because there was no more to be found: just like that. If we don't take the time to develop alternative forms of energy, it could wipe out the human race as we know it.
All of a sudden we're using solar energy. While this is great for the environment, it's not so great for the worldwide economy. Entire industries would be out of work, just like that. Everybody who worked in the gasoline industry would be out of work. We would no longer have a need for gas stations; so, those people will be out of work too. Truckers will be out of work if they don't have an alternative form of energy to power their vehicles. The shipping industry would be affected too. There are all kinds of affects that would be felt everywhere on the planet.
This might require a way to get everybody that was working in the gas industry to be retrained into doing something else. There would also be other issues that would need attention as well. For example, if someone is just about ready to retire from the industry; how will all of this affect their pension? Will they even still get a pension?
Then, there are the other issues of; whoever the worldwide powers are that force us to use gasoline, if they will ever allow us to develop alternative forms of energy. It seems that if anybody develops an alternative form of energy that actually works, that it winds up disappearing from existence like it was never created. I suspect that this is because the people in charge of the gas companies are closely connected to the lawmakers who I suspect receive some kind of a payoff from the gas companies to force us to continue to use it.
In the end, it's all about money. It's like the old saying goes: money talks, and bullshit walks. This is the honest to God truth. I'm sure that there are people who will deny this and I'm sure that they're sitting around saying, deny, deny, deny.
While this kind of a position is great for them because it makes them able to sustain their fancy lifestyle, they don't really realize that it could come crashing to an end one day.
The reason I write this, is not to scare you but, to warn you that if we don't take steps to fix this problem; these are the types of challenges that we will face.
