What is the Worse Christmas Gift Ever?

What I Wouldn't Want to Ever Get

Margaret Kerr
I have always been fairly lucky during the holidays when it comes to Christmas gifts, I haven't ever gotten a really horrible Christmas gift from anyone since I was in elementary school. I was in third grade and we did anonymous Christmas gifts and I was the last one to pick a Christmas gift, which meant whatever was left was what I got. What happened to be left was an unwrapped, used puzzle that had pieces missing from it. At that time, I was young, naive, hurt and upset, but now that I'm an adult, I realize that it wasn't the end of the world.

I realized, as I got grew up and became more aware of money; watching my family struggle with how much or how little there was, that it's not the actual Christmas gift that matters, it's the time that is shared that is more important. Does that mean there are no bad gifts? Far from it, there are definitely Christmas gifts that should be avoided.

For instance, would you want to get divorce papers for a Christmas gift? It is cold, callous and cruel to give anyone a Christmas gift like that. Wait until the holidays are over, let them enjoy the love of family and friends. Are divorce papers even a viable Christmas gift? I'm sure that if you wanted to, you could have them delivered on Christmas day, but what kind of person would actually do that?

Another Christmas gift to avoid giving someone is a bill. I've seen businesses make a point of sending out bills so that they arrive the day before Christmas, essentially ruining the joy of spending the holiday with family and friends. I've spent many Christmas' trying to figure out how I'm going to survive until the next paycheck because some unexpected bill showed up in my mailbox.

Really, the moral of the story, to me, is that if you pick a gift that you think that someone will like, then they probably will. If someone spends time and thought on picking out something nice for you, then appreciate the thought, even if it's something that you hate. Not everyone can pick out the perfect gift, but they do put in the effort.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth and remember that Christmas is about spending time with the ones that you love, not about the gifts that you receive.

My husband and I have a joke: "What do you want for Christmas?" "A divorce." "Well, I wasn't planning on spending that much." Ha, ha, ha- funny every year!
