What Would You Change About Your Favorite Product?

Changes in Marketing Strategies Are Just as Important as the Changes in Products Themselves

Nary Pung
In the world of shopping, men and women alike have once during their shopping errands have come to the conclusion that some gender-specific products should be marketed equally to both men and women. If I had the power to change my favorite bath and body products I would change the way they are being marketed to consumers. Bath products are either marketed as gender-specific or gender-neutral. For example, Gillette is the manufacturer of both men's and women's disposable shavers. Neutrogena is another manufacturer that produces unscented or lightly scented facial cleansers and creams for both men and women. A good way of avoiding the gender-specific conundrum with regard to shopping for bath and body products is to buy gender-neutral items.

However, some companies are more gender-fixed rather than gender-neutral. Herbal Essences, whose clientele are predominantly female, do not really need to market their line of products to men because they are popular among women anyway. Axe is another gender-fixed company that is tremendously popular among men regardless of their unneeded attempt at marketing to their female clientele.

Is it true that some men's products can be used for women, and vice versa?

Yes! Men's products could also be used by women, and vice versa. One reason why you don't see women perusing the men's aisles for bath and body products is because some women fear that the products which they purchase will somehow be indicative of their gender identity. The same is true for some men who would purchase an over-priced designer aftershave rather than purchase an affordable witch hazel, aloe, and chamomile infused after-shave gel or spray which you would find at the women's bath store aisles. Why don't we just change the labels and move the items around the store's aisles with little regards to gender specifics? Women's after shave soothing creams can be placed on men's aisles and men's shave creams can be placed on women's aisles.

Oh right, and some men who prefer to keep their coifs dry during showers would like to freely express their desire to purchase shower caps without embarrassment, while some women would like to buy Axe body shower puffs to go with their assortment of body washes and shower creams. Thus, the packaging of most products should be changed so that they appeal to both male and female consumers. The changes would allow for a better way of shopping.

Nowadays you will find more make up products designed for men. For example, at Studio5 you will find corrective makeup for the face and skin. So yes, a lot has changed over the years.

Seems like gender barriers are breaking down anyway. When I was a young man, no guy would have been caught dead wearing eye makeup or rouge. Now you see it somewhat regularly.

I agree! But then they wouldn't be able to get away with charging so much more for women's products. I buy men's shaving cream - it is 3 dollars cheaper, comes in a bigger can, and just as great as the way too expensive skinny cans of women's shaving cream.
