During our youth, we make decisions based on our age and our life's experiences. It is only when we age, do we realize how foolish we were basing our decisions on what we imagined would be, instead of what it was.
We raise children hoping that we can keep them from making similar mistakes we made. If they listen, we might be able to save them from some of the wrong choices we made. However, they each have their own ideas and make their own decisions. At times, they might make their own mistakes.
Speaking for myself, I can see the path so clearly.

Graduating from High School was an achievement in those days and college was not mandatory or expected. It was the time before woman's lib and women were 'housewives' instead of college graduates.
This is not to say that many women did not have careers. However, in my household it was thought that t men went to college in order to support the family, while the women remained at home and had children and tended to the family.
I graduated from High School with an Academic degree. I had earned enough course credits to attend college. I also learned typing and stenography in case I wanted to get a job instead of pursuing further education.
I decided to go to college.
The first year was great and I enjoyed both the academic and the friendly atmosphere of the school. The second year things changed. I decided to leave and I so I quit.
Therefore, I had to find a job. I was grateful that I had learned both typing and steno during my high school years.
I searched the want-ads in the newspaper and found two jobs that I liked. I called each and set up an appointment for an interview. Since they were both located in New York City, and I lived in Brooklyn, I made both interviews for the same day.
The first job was as an administrative assistant for a very well known television personality. It was thrilling to think of working directly for someone of this high caliber. I had my sights at getting this job, but I went to the second interview nevertheless.
The next interview was to be a stenographer for an unknown television magazine. This was less exciting because I had never heard of this company before, and I thought it would be boring to just be taking shorthand all day. But I went on the interview nevertheless, and passed the steno test.
Both said they would get back to me, as they had others to interview. I went back home practically flying at the thought of working for this very well known TV personality.
A day later I received a telephone call from both of the potential jobs. I was hired by each, if I wanted the job.
I had to make a quick decision. I accepted the job working for the television personality and turned down the one for the magazine.
The following Monday I started to work at the job as Administrative Assistant to the television personality. I dressed well and was all excited, but this was soon short lived. I found out that I was not going to work directly for him, but was to be an assistant to his Administrative Assistant, which included making coffee for them each morning, filing and a little typing.
The job lasted maybe a day or two. It was not at all as I expected. I called the other position and was told that the job had been taken. I did not have a job.
If I had a second chance, and had made another choice, my entire life would have been different. As it turned out the stenographer job would have been working for TV Guide. The magazine was getting ready to putting out their first edition and were staffing the office.
I could have worked and gone from being a stenographer into a writer. It is difficult to predict just where I could have ended up, Remember that writing was my first love. All I know is that my entire life would have been different, if I had only made a different choice.

I think many of us here have made bad choices so do not feel alone. On the oyher hand you could be dead and your bad choice may kept you from being a CEO assigned to a lavish office on the top floor of the World Trade Center on September 11th, so be happy you never know.
I was a nurse for 17 years... If I could go back I would have done more.. I would have left home, gone to college and university and become either a doctor or veterinarian. my first love is animals.
