According to Wikipedia, the term "diva" was originally used to describe a woman of rare, outstanding talent. It comes from the Italian word 'divina', which means "divine" in its feminine form. Ultimately it comes from the feminine form of the Latin word divus or diva, meaning "divine one." Diva was most commonly used to describe a great female opera singer, but in recent times it's been used to describe R&B or pop singers, reality TV stars, and currently the women of World Wrestling Entertainment.
Over the years, women have provided valet-ringside managerial services for the male professional wrestlers. Two of the earliest and best examples are Miss Elizabeth and Sensational Sherri Martel. Elizabeth most notably managed Macho Man Randy Savage and later on Hulk Hogan. Sherri was a manager for the likes of Shawn Michaels and Macho Man Randy Savage as well. Later down the road Sunny (Tammy Lynn Sytch) and Sable (Rena Mero) entered the WWE, at first as managers, and eventually they were labeled WWE Divas. Trish Stratus and Terri Runnels also came along to be managers, and eventually turned into wrestlers. There's been a long line of WWE divas, and they often compete for the famous WWE Womens Title. It's also spawned a yearly contest called the "WWE Diva Search", where hopeful contestants compete to become the next diva in the WWE.
The WWE Divas appear regularly to wrestle on the TV shows such as Raw, Smackdown, and ECW as well as at Pay-Per-View events. They also have some of the most unique and interesting types of matches seen in sports entertainment. These lovely ladies of wrestling have contests of all types from pudding and gravy bowl matches to lingerie pillow fights and bikini battle royals. There's no arguing the importance of the WWE Diva in pro wrestling today. They provide yet another aspect that makes the WWE great, as the divas truly provide fans with eye-catching sports entertainment!
